Default Guns Anyone?

http://strongsville.patch.com/articl...ot-all-of-them

I'm indifferent on the feelings of being able to carry a weapon. On one hand, I think that criminals have an advantage since they don't follow the law anyway, so upstanding citizens should be able to carry a weapon. On the other hand, I do not believe that we should have to conceal a weapon for the simple reason that most people are not going to start trouble with someone having a gun, and how are we supposed to know who is packing heat or not -- esp. if their weapon is hidden? If I'm in a situation where I do have a weapon, I would like to know who else has a weapon (in case I have to defend myself). Now, here's some other things to consider. First, Ohio passed a law saying that I have the right to carry a weapon (gun), but what benefit do I get if I want to go out with my wife and son to the mall, restaurant, or church and I'm not allowed the right by the establishment to have a weapon? It defeats the purpose of the legislation in the first place. Yes, chances are nothing is going to happen in church, but what if I'm in a mall parking lot or gas station? Oh, I can't have the weapon at the mall, so I'll leave it in my vehicle. I stop for gas, something happens (because my weapon is in my vehicle), so the point is raised again that there are too many uncertains to be worked out, and I don't feel safer by legislation telling me it is O.K. to have a weapon at certain places and not others. Last, the article pointed out that an individual carrying a gun is prohibited from drinking alcohol. Again, I thought that the whole point of the legislation was granting upstanding individuals the right to bear arms provided they meet the guidelines of the law -- no felonies/convictions, properly trained, permit granted, etc. I'm not going to enter a questionable place and let my guard down by drinking, and the establishments I enter are family places, such as Applebee's, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc., and not your local hole-in-the-wall. I feel that the law is not much different than before because it is very hindering. Any thoughts on this, and for the record, I do not own any weapons.

Guns for everyone as far as I'm concerned. However, I don't think carrying them in a bar is a wise idea.

If your responsible carrying in a bar is perfectly okay... You can have a beer and have access to your gun just dont have too much one or 2 beer limit. Virginia you can carry in places that serve alcohol and guess what we dont have massive wild west brawls and shootings. I think everyone (provided they have not done something to have their rights taken away) should be able to carry where ever they want. But thats just me.

You have lots to learn about firearms and where and when and how to carry.

Also I carry to church because there are tons of instances where crazy druggies bust into a church and come after people and end up killing innocent people. My uncle out in TN has everyone who is able to carry a firearm carry to church in fact they have people posted on all the doors the reason being is METH heads

I carry anywhere the law does not prohibit me. I have a huge problem with businesses that prohibit me from going there. so I dont go there. And if I did go there and something were to happen they better have a really good law firm cause if you prohibit me from protecting me then I expect you to have a very safe environment in which if something happened action could be taken immediately to safeguard me and my loved ones.

Also Buffalo Wild Wings is very anti gun this is the sign on their door

I am blessed to be in a pretty pro-freedom state

Now, i advocate carrying a gun as much as i enjoy breathing. If an establishment doesnt wish for me to carry my weapon on their property (bars excluded) i dont spend my money there. i look at it this way, if my gun isn't welcome there, then neither am i. Ultimately, its their loss... they're the ones losing protection from an upstanding citizen that legally obtained the right to defend themselves and those around them, and they're losing my money.

When you get a chance go to youtube and look up "Ohio Cop Concealed Weapons Freak-Out"...examples of how police officers SHOULD NOT act.

I live in VA, and recently obtained my concealed weapons permit. Although I think the concealed permit should be a little more difficult to obtain...aka NO online "safety" courses...I fully back our right to carry openly and concealed. It worries me to know that some gun shops offer online certification...nobody could possibly be well informed on safe gun practices, weapons laws, or fully understand the responsibility that comes with firearm ownership from an online course. People should AT THE MINIMUM be required to attend a full-day session with a credible and certified instructor, as well as shoot the firearm under their supervision...Coming from a firearm oriented family, I've been raised around guns and am very comfortable/confident in my own handling and judgement with them.

But enough about that, every state's requirements vary, but many (in the Southeast especially) have reciprocity between them...meaning the state governments recognize and accept the requirements and standards set by the others. Yes, there are many restrictions on where you CAN and CANNOT carry openly as well as concealed, and it's very important you stay informed on the ever changing laws in your area...with that said it's also necessary there are these laws. I think we can all agree a middle school sporting event is no place to need a firearm for example. Also guns mixed with anywhere that serves alcohol is bad news seeing as how most people's judgement falters when you throw back a few. Speaking solely for myself, I did not get my permit so I could carry my pistol everywhere...I got it so I have that option. I live in a very urban area with quite a bit of questionable people and places. Although I'm not a small guy (6'1", 200lbs), and have a wrestling/boxing background, I am concerned about the safety of my family and I. After witnessing my last car jacking and assault (with my fiance present unfortunately), I decided to go and apply for my permit. Knowing that I have that option comforts me...going to the ATM/gas station late at night is a prime example of when I think we all could potentially feel a bit nervous and see our fair share of low lifes.

With all that said, deciding whether or not to pursue your permit is a big decision and I'm glad you're taking the time to get some insight. Although it can be a blessing in some situations, it is a huge liability. 3 things must be present when the choice to use deadly force...ability, opportunity and jeopardy. If you have a way out, flee. One big misconception...YOU CAN NOT SHOOT SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY STOLE SOMETHING...deadly force can not be used to protect PROPERTY...only lives. Some states get funny on the talk about pets...since pets are considered property (we pay tax on them if you register them with the city)...they say you can not jeopardize the life of a human, criminal or not, to protect the life of an animal...MY personal opinion on that is I would rely on a sympathetic jury haha. But seriously, just do your homework on your locality...weigh your options...and make the best decision for you. You're decision can effect someone's life one day. Hope this helped.

I want to explain that while I know this can be a topic for heated discussion, a forum allows us to get anothers opinion. The reason for my original thread was because good points were made in the original article, but again legislators have different reasons for passing bills, etc. One advocate pointed out that when comparing Ohio's gun laws to other states, "Ohio's are broad" and only "put us into the 90's". In some ways, it is almost like why introduce this (as I mentioned before) in the first place because it hasn't added much benefit nor makes me feel much safer today than last week before the legislation passed. I was hoping to get a more overall feel for how people think or feel based on Ohio's laws vs. the laws in other states. We already can agree that it is common knowledge that our constitution lets us bear arms. I just feel that a license should not exclude but include. For example, the constitution does not mention driving, and the law says that I have a right as a responsible citizen to drive a vehicle pretty much anywhere and at anytime. The only exceptions are if I am drunk, high, or become a danger to others.
Thanks to those who responded since your comments did help, and I understand that laws vary based on municipality, etc. Given that Ohio now allows gun owners "more choices" with the right to bear, I feel that it is more the going through the motions (like security at the airport) rather than this is great since I now feel better prepared and the state recognizes that right.

I'm pretty sure I know exactly what this is refering to. The car owner failed to inform the patrol officer he had a weapon, and the cop wouldn't let him speak. I can't tell you how many times this appeared on the local news. The policeman was totally in the wrong, and I believe he was fired for his actions (which he should have been).

That's the problem with the gun laws. If an armed person entered campus, how would you be able to defend yourself or others if the weapon is 200 yards away? And if a criminal were to break into your vehicle, guess what? They would most likely find your weapon. So again, guns are great when they are in your hands, but by restricting where and when they can be accessed, it is the victim who is more and more out of luck. How safe do you feel or how safe do I feel on campus with your gun in your car? And I bet it is loaded also. Should we then have more guns out there in hopes that maybe they will fall into the correct hands? It is a never ending cycle. The politicians can say they passed laws, the gun owner can say that he/she has more rights, and the gun hater -- you get the idea -- can hate the fact that more guns are out there.
