Default Reno air race crash, many injured, a few dead, including pilot...

Best quality I have found so far...

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xl546q ... pt-16_news

In a June video posted at the website for the air race, Leeward said the Galloping Ghost raced from 1946 to 1950 in the Cleveland Air Races and afterward in other events.

He said his crew cut 10 feet off the plane's length and made other modifications to improve its aerodynamic abilities and reach speeds of 500 mph.

"I know it will do the speed, the systems aren't proven yet. We think they're going to be OK," Leeward said in the video dating from June.

A trim tab was missing from the tail seconds before the crash as seen in the picture below...

Leeward was from my town. He even started a little Air Ranch here.

This is a very sad day for the entire aviation community. Some photos of the aircraft just before the crash show one of the elevator trim tabs bending and breaking off, this it goes out of control. The pilot also said mayday once. So this appears to be a very freak mechanical failure as opposed to some kind of pilot error or incapacitation.

I'm trying to figure out in my head what kind of impact this will have on the future of airshows. 9 deaths (which will no doubt climb), 15 critical injuries, 45 other injuries, and a ramp littered with dismembered bodies is not something that can be brushed off. Perhaps some changes are in order, however I hope it doesn't result in a kneejerk cancellation of everything.

It is horrible too, because there is a good chance that he was knocked out moments before the impact. He said mayday once as he left the flight formation; there is a picture online of the aircraft with the rear landing wheel out (possibly released by heavy vibration of the unstable aircraft) and the ****pit appears empty. Leads me to believe he was either knocked out or assuming the crash position.

Conscious or not, based on that impact and disintegration, he wouldn't have felt a thing. Which is good I guess.

A sad day day for alot of people. There was supposed to be an air show in my area today along with a car show at a nearby small airport. "mechanical failure" has cost people their lives for many years now. Wether it was in aircraft, auto racing, or this horrific tragedy that word "mechanical failure" is and has been one of my biggest fears if not the biggest fear I've ever had. The pilot that did die was suppose to be here in VA at the air and car show today. At least we know that he did die doing what he loved to do or he wouldn't have continued doing it if he didn't love doing it. That is a direct quote from alot of people that did die doing this or some other form of racing, including Dale Earnhardt Sr. I'm sure he will be missed by alot of people and condolences go out to his family.
