Default Mom's car dies...

Well my mom is at her crossroads with her car. Yesterday morning it wouldn't do anything at all when she tried to start it. It's not even been out of the shop for a week yet and it already has to go back in. I've told her that the time has come to get a new car until I'm blue in the face. The Neon has to go. She's already spent a grand total of $2,000 bucks in repairs this year counting last week's $982.66 dollar repair bill. That would've been a really good down payment towards a new vehicle. The neon isn't throwing out any codes at all, yet it's drained a brand spanking new battery. The starter sounds horrible, and the alternator is pretty much history. I've told her and told her that now would be a good time to buy a new vehicle since the 2012 models are starting to come in, and they're cutting some really good deals on the 2011 models to make room for the new ones they're getting. The neon has been a POS from the word go since chrysler came out with it in 1995. The only version that showed any quality at all was the SRT4 Neon. She is trying to decide what to do. If she fixes it, the repairs will just return at a later time and cost even more to fix it. She won't go near a used vehicle at all. And she doesn't want to pay more than $250 per month. Yet she wants power everything and alot of the options they've been advertising on TV. I've told her that her down payment would have to be nearly half, and her car would also have to be in excellent condition with low miles in order for her to get that low of a payment. She's not listening to me at all.

She can't drive a 5 speed manual and I don't won't to give my ranger up. But I did try to talk her into getting herself a new ranger though. She won't budge.

I tried and ended up getting a new clutch installed. She burned the other one up pretty badly. Her biggest problem is that she refuses to listen when she should. Another lady that she works with has told her the same things that I have.

Oh I've got plans for mine already in the works. That top secret logo used as my avatar is there for a reason. She just doesn't want a truck. But she is interested in Ford though. We've already looked at a Ford Focus. She really liked the Ford Taurus Sho too. She didn't like the price tag of it though. The Focus is within her reach concerning her budget.

My mom is the same way. I wouldn't worry about it. Nothing you can do will change her opinion, so why even bother to waste your time and breath? My mom has needed tires since last year, and I keep adding air to her rear driver side. She keeps saying she is busy, blah, blah, blah, and I keep telling her that Murphy's Law will strike when she needs to be somewhere and the tire is completely flat. She knows that my Aunt is really sick and is in hospice (and lives out-of-town), and she even mentioned last week that she still needs tires. Almost every store around here is having sales of some kind, and does she take the car in? No. She'll wait till she gets a flat, she will need to be somewhere, and then I'll have to hear about it. She drives a 2004 Taurus, so tires won't be that badly priced. I'll bet she can get all four for under or close to what my wife and I will pay for two tires for a Ford Edge. Sorry to have hijacked the thread!!

Still wouldn't matter. With my luck, I'd be out-of-town with her for my Aunt's wake or ready to go to bed and I'd get the dreaded, "Come help me. I'm on the side of the road".

Update: Today is the day that my mom watches my son, and I dropped him off this morning and get talked into taking her car in to have the tire looked at again. I knew that she needed tires, but a trusted neighbor told her that "maybe something was run over". I even clipped coupons that gave her an idea of what to expect price wise, and she gave me specific instructions where to go. I told her that I would call when I heard something. Luckily, the shop wasn't that busy. They immediately put the vehicle on the lift and realized that the tire in question was spider-webbing along the side. They checked the three others, and the front driver was determined to be low on tread. I called my mom with the diagnosis that she needed at minimum two tires (they were original equipment and served there purpose). She became worried about paying more than she should and wanted to check deals, etc., so I leave -- upset that I wasted an hour of my time. When I get to my Mom's, we discuss options, and she asks me, "What should I do"? I told her I've wasted my time, she's known that she needs the tires, WTF! Bite the bullet, and get it over with. She agrees, and asks if I minded going back. I told her to first call the shop, identify herself, and make sure they have the tires in stock. So, I end-up going back to have two new tires put on. Luckily, they were slow today and located only a couple miles down the road. End of story.

She drives a 2003 Taurus, so tires won't be that badly priced. I'll bet she can get all four for under or close to $200(and a decent set at that). There is no hijack of this thread. I've already told her what the next repair will be after this one and to make matters worse so has another neon owner that she works with. It will already have to be towed in to be traded in. She knows that her car is indeed shot. The neon is one of the hardest vehicles to work on in terms of labor and time. Every time a repair has to be made you basically have to remove the engine. During my time at Nascar tech I've worked on alot of neons that came through there for repairs from a dealer that took them in as a trade in. The usual saying was between 3 of us was this: I'll get the cherry picker, another student would say I'll get the jack stands, and then another friend would say I'll go and get some tools and the creeper. Our instructor would say: For what? then he'd see the neon setting there and then he'd say the following: "Say no more". At that point he'd walk off. The reason I say there's no hijacking is the fact that it's the same principle basically.

She now realizes what I am saying but she just doesn't know exactly what to do about it. Mainly because she doesn't want that car payment every month which I can sympathize with her on that especially in this economy. But there comes a time to realize that the vehicle is old and must either be restored, sold, traded in, or junked. If she keeps this car yet again I will just give up on her concerning cars and trucks in general. Neons have no significant value at all and restoring one could cost as much as a new car if not more. Plus they're every where and useless. Now if her neon was 20 years old and they all had been fased out, then it would be worth restoring. She has had this car for 10 years as of this coming November. She got it in late November 2001 as a new arrival for the 2002 model year. Basically I'm frustrated with the whole ordeal.

She has her standards set too high. There is nothing wrong with used cars. She will never find a new car with a payment of less than $250. I don't even think a perfect credit rating could help her.

Yep. I've told her that even if she wanted that low of a payment she'd have to put at least half of the price tag down, almost perfect credit if not perfect. I've also told her about the certified used cars availible. 9 times out of 10, those usually come with a warranty and are looked over extremely well before they even get any repairs much less become certified used. Her standards are set way too high and alot of the options she wants, are putting the price tag out of her reach. But she did listen to me about one thing though. I suggested that she should wait a little bit before going for any type of deals on anything. The reason is because alot of the high end stuff has been coming since march of this year for the 2012 model year. But alot the mass produced affordable stuff usually starts coming in around about the end of august towards the first of september. Basically what that means is that they'll knock even more off the price tag to get rid of the 2011 model year in order to make more room for the 2012's coming out. This happens every year like clock work. So for those wanting a really good deal on a new vehicle, start shopping around towards the end of August towards September to get the best possible deal you can. This tatic can save you alot of money. I saved over $7K on my ranger in 2004 by waiting till the beginning of October to buy my ranger.

I HATE to say it, but... Have her look at the Hyundais. I had a friend who had so many issues with his Volvo that he bought a Hyundai and he never looked back. Very good bang for the buck!

I did that already but it went in one ear and out the other. Things really got worse when my other uncle whom is a certified dummy stopped by today. He suggested to her that she should get it fixed. That went over with me like a turd in the swimming pool. This uncle that stopped by doesn't know a piston from a steering wheel to say the least. I know about Hyundais. They aint a bad car for the money at all, but it is an import which is why she won't go near it. She's obsessed with Infiniti. It took me and a car dealer along with an ASE certified Master Nissian Tech to tell her that all it is basically is an over priced Nissian Altima. And to this day she still has trouble believing that when it is a well known fact. Now you guys have seen what I am up against. I might be many things but I am definately not an idiot when it comes to buying vehicles. Hyundai would be a good choice for her concerning the import side of things.
