Default I just got my ship date Oct. 18th!!!

YES!!!! Ive been in the Air Force DEP (delayed enlistment program) since December and I finally got my ship date for pararescue! October 18th is when I head to basic and after that to the PJ special operations indoctrination for 10 week selection (90% washout rate...god Im so stoked its gonna be epic) and then if I pass that Im off for 2 years of AST (advanced skills training) which includes SCUBA, HALO/HAHO(military freefall parachute school), high angle rescue(rock climbing to save people), SERE (survival evasion resistance escape), small unit tactics, advanced weapons training, advanced vehicle training (hummers, cars, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, atv, skiing, and others), and then EMT-basic and EMT-paramedic training, and finally pararescue graduation course where it all gets put together with scenerio based missions as a team. All I have to do is pass the PAST(physical ability and stamina test) again and Im off to the races. Fortunately Im not worried about the PAST at all cause I met Ironman standards(highest bracket) the first time with a stomache flu so I think I can manage to pass it again. I cant wait to become one of about 300 total pararescuemen and be able to proudly represent their motto: "that others may live."

Sorry just had to let everyone on here know cause I just got word about it today and Im so excited I cant even sleep so Ive been workin out like crazy tonight just trying to burn off the excess energy lol!!!!

Indeed HALO is High Altitude Low Opening and HAHO is High Altitude High Opening and its a toss up for which Im more excited for HALO or SCUBA cause the Army combat diver school (where I will hopefully be going) is supposedly grueling and that just gets me amped up

this is so weird. I am trying to enlist into Air Force right now as a PJ. I am always on special tactics looking stuff up. I am having the hardest time cause I need 3 criminal waviers for stupid shit I pulled when I was 17. Congrats man and I find out the 15th of august if I can enlsit. I am going skydiving in t minus 3 hours and getting certified so it looks better on my waviers and stuff.

Question just to get a heads up where your at with the PAST... what's your run times... what can you run compared to like let's say week 8 which is 6 mi in 45:00 that's my only trouble is running. I'm a natural fish... I can barely do 2 in 14 min

HAHAHAHA so I was reading an article about some of the training at INDOC and one author said "The training course labels the pool sessions as 'water confidense training' but that would be like calling a beating with a baseball bat 'hickory familliarization.' Some of these excersizes consist of the trainees having their hands and feet bound by ropes and being tossed into the pool with weight belts and going through series of underwater acrobatics for as long as the cadres see fit." For those who dont know 'cadres' are current pararescuemen who have done all the training before and are the instructors for the course. The kicker is that they really dont care if you pass out in the pool during excersizes as they are trained and certified paramedics. So they will drag you out, resusitate you, and send you back into the pool. INDOC starts with 80 PJ trainees and the training gets harder and harder until there are 8 or less people left. They dont kick anyone out everyone who quits has to voluntarily pull themselves from the course, or are recycled for medical reasons. So far from my DEP 2 people have gone and one made it to week 9.5 out of 10 weeks before the stress fractures in his feet were so bad he literally couldnt stand, and the other quit at week 7 after developing a clorine related lung infection from inhaling too much pool water. The doctors cleared him to resume training but he threw in the towel. Im looking forward to the opportunity to become the first PJ from my DEP and I sure as hell wont quit no matter what.

Well lets start this off with saying I kind of have an advantage with the runs cause im training in Colorado at 6,250ft elevation so that will only help when I go down to Texas for INDOC. My time on the PAST was 8:06 for the 1.5 mile run. Ive been running in Cheyanne Mountain Park which is literally up and down mountain trails. Right now my fastest time for 6 miles on a mountain(the times at INDOC are on a track) is 52:37. As of today I havent timed myself on a track for the 6 mile run but also AS OF TODAY I know I can beat 45 min 6mile on a track. The problem is maintaining that level of fitness through basic. The runs are much slower in basic and most of it is in formation and singing jodies. My biggest struggle was also running (I swam for the international junior olympics team back in the day so swimming isnt a problem for me). The trick is to attack it from multiple angles. Ill do interval training both on track and trail as well as long slow runs and moderate distance moderate pace runs and also what they test for high intensity set distance runs. Weightlifting and stretching also help a ton and I also do Crossfit to help with both cardio-respitory strenght and the mental toughness of fighting through discomfort and tiredness. I do the same with swimming. My real weakness now is fin swimming but Im working on it daily and also practicing my underwater swims(work on your technique for this), breath holding, treading water(egg beater style no hands), knot tying, and CSS (combat swimmer stroke).

Also, be aware that there are vision requirements as well for PJ. My friend beat my ass at the PAST but didnt meet the vision requirements so he is going SERE and we are actually going to basic together. If my memory is correct I believe you have to have 20/70 in ur best eye correctable to 20/20 and 20/100 in ur worst eye correctable to 20/20 and have good depth perception and color vision. This is all tested at MEPS (military entry processing station) and my depth perception is fantastic in the real world but the damn test they have you do for it is hard as hell and everybody has a tough time with it so beware and take ur time choosing the dots (youll know what I mean when you get there) I lucked out and was born with and maintained better than 20/20 vision in both eyes.

I hope this helps and know that a fellow rangerer is on here to help out(at least until October 18th).

Default Re: I just got my ship date Oct. 18th!!!

I had the stomach flu when I took my past so I vomitted after the swim and pushups lol

EVENT-REQUIREMENT-MY RESULTS
25m underwater swim-pass-pass
3min break
25m underwater swim-pass-pass
10min break
500m surface swim-14:00-9:22
30min break
1.5 mile run-10:22-8:06
10min break
Pullups-6 in 1min-19
3min break
Situps-45 in 2min-71
3min break
Pushups-45 in 2min-67

After the swim expect to lose about 20% reps on pullups and pushups. The breaks look long but with the exception of the one after the 2 underwaters(it gets cold doing nothing in the pool for 10min lol) the breaks seem to fly by.
