Read it: http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/20...-pay-in-taxes/

----------

The main findings: The overall effective federal tax rate (the ratio of federal taxes to household income) was 20.7 percent in 2006, with the highest quintile of American households paying 25.8 percent of their income in federal taxes.

Exactly!!! It's not fair to have more tax on those who work hard. They earned it so they deserve to keep it.

I agree that a set consumption tax would be the most fair way to go about things and it would pick up a lot of people who do things "under the table" and thus circumvent the tax system.

I disagree on taxing corporations. Do you REALLY think that money comes out of the companie's pocket? If so, you are fooling yourself. They pass that cost right on to the consumer.

Now, also think about this. Mining company mines a basic product like iron. They sell the iron ore to a steel mill to be made into steel. Mining company makes money and pays taxes on it. Steel mill makes their steel and sells it to Automobile company. Steel mill makes a money and pays taxes. Automobile company make an automobile and sells it to Joe Consumer. Automobile company makes money and pays taxes.

So, in this example, there is three layers of taxation that the consumer pays on top of the visible taxes they pay on the sale, registration, etc, etc. Again, do you think the mining company, the steel mill, or the automobile company is not going to put the cost of paying taxes in the price of their product? If they don't, they won't be in business long.

Pick any product you want, it will be the same thing. Food, gas, computers, etc, etc.

A similar argument was made years ago on property taxes concerning renters. The local wage tax was created initially to tax non-property owners because "they don't pay property taxes". Now, what property owner is not going to pass the cost of property taxes on to the renter?

There is so many layers of taxation going on, it's insane.

The tax code is so complex, very few people are legal. It's impossible to be unless you just let them take out whatever and don't claim any back.

Not to mention that a national sales tax would do away with the IRS and make the government that much smaller and efficient. Of course, the IRS people won't like that they would be out of a job.

Also, why and how is it fair that a married couple, especially ones with children pay less taxes than a single person with no children?

With the banking program that I have. I've been keeping track of all the taxes and fees paid to the government and any level. I'm paying about 60% in taxes! Roughly, not including whatever buried taxes there are because of whatever I buy due to the corporations being taxed.

Long pause of silence on the other end of the phone.

In between election cycles all I hear is people bitching and screaming "Vote the bums out!" "Remember in November!"
Then, when the election rolls around, what do voters do? They vote in candidates from the same 2 parties and start the bitching all over again.
In my opinion though, the Republicans are going to take the bullet on this one.
I think that the democrats are going to be voted out this coming election for my state and the president of the U.S. is most likley to be voted out this time around as well. The majoraity of the public can't stand the prick and his own party has turned on him. Never the less it's the same thing all over again. Complaining about the whole deal until the next election, and then it repeats.

SgtsandMan - You have just discovered some more issues with the represented tax code in this country . Justifiable tax breaks . Thats the part of this that is so crazy as the further deep you go , the more complex the issue becomes . That is why its so important to review it ( An outside party independantly ) and then make recommendations to the House and senate and make it fair for everybody . Lets not forget subsidies for farmers and industry as well .

Subsidies are just a another way we pay for things in a round about way. Ethanol (E85) is an example. The price at the pump would be higher than regular gasoline without them.

Yep. That's one of many loop holes the government squeezes through several times over. If they can tax the air we breathe they would. truth be told I'm surprised that they haven't to be honest about it.
