During the last election for MN Governor, I got a polling call for the Republican candidate.
Told them I would be voting for the Independent candidate Tom Horner, and told the pollster what I thought of both major parties.
Long pause of silence on the other end of the phone.

In between election cycles all I hear is people bitching and screaming "Vote the bums out!" "Remember in November!"
Then, when the election rolls around, what do voters do? They vote in candidates from the same 2 parties and start the bitching all over again.
In my opinion though, the Republicans are going to take the bullet on this one.

With these securities being leveraged 40 times or so and spread through financial markets making an upside down pyramid with these non-performing papers and a hyped realestate market as a base.

All this leveraged fiat value was used to purchase real hard assets and the Federal Reserve is now in QE2 to monitize the debt.

Where do the funds come from to pay the interest on the debt that was given to private firms to cover their schemes?
The fed simply prints it. Incresed money supply they call it.

The scenario you describe is good, but one of the most important factors that led to the whole thing going south is the derivities, specificly Credit default swaps that backed it all up. A CDS is an unregulated insurance policy(loosely) Can you imagine what kind of nonsence you can get into as an investor if you can by insurance to cover your losses. No document loans on a million dollar house anyone?

Then we can talk about the corrupt credit rating agencys. Lets take a security made up of hundreds of these million dollar no doc loans. How who you rate them. Most of those guys gave themAAA rating. A sure thing escentially .

The good news is that the govt is trying to get their heads around what went wrong and to put in some sort of regulation to keep it happening again.

Except the GOP, their taking tons of money from the huge banks insurance companys and invetment firm to kill anything that would actually help the working class no get screwed again

politics is a very sensitive issue, out of all the presidents we have had, few have done great things. In this time the presidents dont control anyhting, it's the whole government, presidents are just a figure head for the media. Things will stay the same as long as were human because politicians are greedy and that will never change.

Very true statements from all you guys !!! Do I have an answer to a solution ? No but I wish I did . A 2 party system has now changed the face of Politics , by not allowing to negotiate , as it is TOO close to lobbyists and others , its hard to look at anything without personal interests . As for me , I will continue to vote as an independant in a VERY democratic state as I agree with the statements by Twin City Ranger . I am Also part conservative financially and methodology , which I think a lot of people are too unless everyone likes spending trillions of dollars every year and not using a little common sense .

I think we could save a lot by cutting spending drastically. Not raising taxes.. but actually making companies pay taxes period.. It blows my mind that companies like GE can get away with paying nothing in taxes, and they still get the majority of government contracts for things. Once you get rid of BS like that.. then come talk to me about how companies and rich people who do pay taxes don't pay their fair share..

I hear you . In a previous post , it was mentioned in the talks to close the tax loopholes that allow this to happen . Lets see if they are serious and review the tax code like a lot of economists say they should .

I get the sense that there is an attitude now that heaven forbid we should raise taxes on the very wealthy. "The job creators" as they are called.
We peasants should instead be feeding them peeled grapes and fanning them with palms.

Before JFK the top tax rate was around 90%, yet we still managed to create industries that created jobs with the likes of Henry Ford still able to become very wealthy in the process.
If taxes were really that closely tied to job creation, how did we do so well before cuts?

Burps - Absolutely I agree with you and know they would not . In our different/New type of economy , spend money to make money is the way of the day . If we were to Take the taxes out of Businesses , large Businesses would not spend on research and development for one , like they do now and it would hurt productivity . Arguements on both sides of this are very valid as a lot of folks say it would not hurt any businesses . Only after it is in place would we really know how bad it would be .

Twin City I Hear you as I am in favor of cutting some of the tax loop holes , mainly a review of ALL of them to see if they are abused or fair credits for businesses .

Either way , its a tough call but in my opinion , in a bad economy you do not raise taxes on anyone until the money starts flowing again to businesses .

Good economy = Raise ( not new ) taxes
Bad economy no Raise or new taxes

I completely agree with cutting the loopholes that are abused, and making everybody pay taxes, including the big corporations.
The thing I don't agree with is the progressive tax system.
I know that currently the top classes aren't paying the 30 something percent that the tax brackets say they should be paying.
If the loopholes were closed, I don't think the top classes should be taxed more. As I have previously stated, they deserve to keep the wealth they have earned, not be taxed to death.

I believe there should be a flat tax across the board. Everybody pays the same % of their income.

yes! I do believe a flat tax would fix alot of things.. sure would make things a lot easier at the very least.

Ya fellas;

Flat tax or maybe a consumption tax. If you know people working for cash, or in the black markets, etc. what they consume would be taxed, simpler maybe than thousands of pages of lobbyist-written tax codes.

I just dont understand why everyone is all about "tax the rich" (more). They pay their share. Lets look at things in a different light.

Johnny busts his balls all week and gets an A on his test. Sally sluffs off all week and gets a C. Now the teacher decided that its not fair that johnny got an A and Sally got a C. So the teacher takes away Johnnys A and give him a B so that sally can get a B.

----------

^^^Where Johnny is the "small business/rich" Sally is the average joe, the teacher is Government.^^^^
