i have a basement. stays at 65-70 year round, untill i fire up the woodstove. my computer is in the basement, which is probibly why i'm on it so damn much, lol

$25 for old radiator (that actually holds water), $15 for box fan, $10 for hose, plus $30 for water bill...thats $70 OR spend the $100 (plus $ 25? for electricity) for an AC thats COLD and spend less time doing it...being a redneck, PRICELESS :P lol


All I did was get those black out shades it cooled the house an easy 25 degrees during the day and didnt spend over $30

I dont use an ac unless its over 100, and even then not always. I just deal with it the rest of the time. Waste of money if you ask me. And yeah that pretty red neck right thur.

All I can say is craigslist. Found a window AC unit on there for $40 that works wonderful, and my power bill went up less than $10 a month since using it.

yes! swamp coolers! lol. they used to use them, especially where the humidity isn't through the roof. that's the main factor right there! I would give it a shot if I didn't live in a dang appt!

This idea is NOT a swamp cooler. A swamp cooler moves air through a wet pad or mesh. The moisture in the pad evaporates which draws heat out of the air causing a nice drop in temperature. In order for this to be effective, the humidity has to be quite low such as in a desert. Anything higher than 50-60% will make it totally pointless because that water will not evaporate.

Pooleo is talking about flowing cool tap water through an automotive radiator with a fan attached to it. That is just normal heat exchange between the air, radiator fins, and the water flowing out to the sprinkler. There is no evaporation cooling. Hick, yes. Swamp, no.

I've done this before. It worked but not well enough to do it again. It worked better to just sit under the sprinkler while watering the grass. Of course the neighbors looked at us weird when we duck taped the sprinkler to the forklift (the water was to cold, we was hoping the extra time in the air would warm it up a little).
