Default A Legal Issue....

Well ladies and gentlemen, I have encountered a legal issue with my T-bucket project. Several manufacturers have stated that open wheeled cars are legal to run here in VA. Well I just found out this past friday from every legal source I can think of that I must have fenders on my t-bucket. Here's my legal problem. Should I comply and make the fenders removable for shows and what not, or should I spend a small fortune and have it registerded in another state? I hate these kinds of choices I have to make, it can cause so many problems with the project that it aint funny. What would you guys do?

Yeah that seems like the direction I'll be going with and is alot cheaper to register it as well. I'm told that to register it in the state of TN and not being a resident would cost well over a $1,000 bucks since I'm not a resident of that state. That's way too much bread there. It's already going to cost me over $200 bucks just to have it titled here in VA. I did find the paint and primer I wanted to use at walmart though which is not going to be expensive at all. The DMV here in VA can be real pricks and they usually are if they're in a good mood. Humorless doesn't do it justice, and they hate registering and titling antique vehicles here period.

Yes, I would. Out of state registration can get very confusing. What happens if the vehicle (even for show) is wrecked, and it is determined that you live in one state and registered the vehicle in another? Same thing with insurance. If you're a policyholder in X state, how can you register in another state? Is there going to be a lienholder, or is the vehicle totally paid off?

Heard that from some neighbors in my building who moved here and were trying to get the title to their cars. I never heard of such a mess.

Virginia's dmv requires me to obtain collectors insurance. Hagerty's insurance agency will not mind me living in one state while the vehicle is registered in another. But the main issue I have is the amount of cost it would take to go this route. $1000 dollars is about the same as it would cost to build it and that is too much for registration period. The DMV here gives me nothing but headaches and makes my blood pressure go through the roof. Just for me to walk in there and renew my daily driver's tags costs me an extra $5 bucks because I didn't go online to renew them instead. I got an excelent rate that makes my geico policy's rate look expensive. Plus I only have to pay the registration once and there's no state inspection on an antique vehicle here if I get the black tag with white letters. The other antique tag that this state has is yellow with blue letters. That one does require a state inspection decal but I don't want that one because it's ugly and it does have to be renewed every year. I will going with the removable fenders because I can them cheaper than what the fee would be to register it in another state.

I'm gonna be an *******, and say that you shouldn't worry about this issue until you actually build the car. Right now this is just a dream of yours, and most dreams do not come to fruition.

Dude, I've already started the build. I just aint posting it up on here yet until it's finished. The reason is because some people in here will try their absolute best to throw some technical advice in here and basicly not be even close to what I'm doing at all. Don't get me wrong I know they mean well and all, but doing it this way leaves no room for arguing if you get my drift. I've already got alot of my materials in that I'll be using already.

Yeah that's the way I'm going to do it. I'm having a little bit of trouble on picking the size of my front tires. I'm trying to choose between either standard size width or narrow width. There's also another reason I haven't posted the project up yet. I want to be able to include all of the info I can during the posting of the project. Things such as fuel economy, handling and various other thins along with some videos as well.

Dude, there is a difference between having your materials, and having the actual car built. You should be more worried about how you're gonna construct the frame, which suspension design you will utilize, which engine you're gonna use, etc. Fenders are cosmetic, and will not get you down the road. Build the car first, then worry about the fenders.

I know what you're saying man, but I am alot further along than you know. The frame should be here pretty soon. I've already decided on my engine and tranny which will be a 4.0 OHV out of a ford ranger. Basicly right now I'm waiting on parts and a few other things. So I thought I get a second opinion on here while I tied up some other loose ends concerning an insurance quote and titling fees that I'll be paying once it's complete. Before you can build you need to get parts and decide on what you like and don't like based on a budget which I already have done. I have wrote enough things down and made some calls and done alot of research before I even ordered the first part, which was the frame. Speedway Motors is whom I am using for most of what I need to get.

They almost never pull over an antique vehicle here except for speeding. Antique vehicle laws here in VA are pretty kool in fact. I only have to pay the tags and titling fees once and that's it.

Knowing my luck I wouldn't get away with it, L.O.L. But you use to live in VA and you know how they don't even bother the antique vehicles here. Only 2 things get them pulled over. Speeding, and to see if and where they can get one for themselves to drive. Those are the only 2 things that VA will pull an antique vehicle over for. Very little if any of the first reason, and almost all of the second reason I stated above.

No not really concerning an antique vehicle. In TN you can get away with murder concerning antiques and VA only requires that you have fenders on your t-bucket when you drive it. Basicly all they require is collectors insurance which is extremely cheap, fenders while your are driving it, and have it properly registered and tagged and that's it. I only have to purchase the tags once and register it once and there are no renewal fees every year and if I get the black tag with white letters, no state inspection sticker is required either.
