Default Need help with wiring a relay

I found a couple other threads but cant seem to apply them to my application. I have an ignition switch for my trail mower im building. There is no spot on the switch for the lead from the coil to kill the motor. The switch has (B)attery, (G)round, (S)tarter, (L)ights, (M)agneto. I tried the ground, but that is always ground regardless of key position. Battery runs to battery, starter runs to the starter relay, lights and magneto are unused.

Is there a way to get a trigger wire from those terminals to activate the relay when the switch is turned off? the switch has 3 positions, off, run, start. I "think" I have figured that I can run coil lead to the 87a on the relay. But Im not much on these relays. Can anyone help?

Right now I have the key switch wired and working to start the motor, but have to run another (pull) switch to turn off the motor.

Thanks for any input

87 goes to what you want to have power

85 is ground

30 is 12v constant with inline fuse

86 is your switch 12v power you still want a small fuse in case of to much amp draw

well im dealing with a ground or negative. The lead from the coil needs to be grounded in order to kill the motor. If I put power to the coil I will fry it, already done that, dont need to do it again

oh shit then just put an inline switch that you can tune a ground on then.

----------

here is a wiring diag for a riding lawn mower

Quote:
This circuit simply performs the AND function for safety as follows: the key switch, foot switch, seat switch, and throttle pot box lever switch must all be ON or HIGH in order for the lawn mower's traction motor to be active. The Key switch also engages the Negative side contactor. The reason a negative side contactor is used is so an extra safe guard is in place in case one of the contactors has a catastrophic failure such as welded contacts which makes it permanently ON. Also this actives the pre-charge circuit when the switch is turned on to avoid sparks being present when the user hooks up battery terminals to the batteries if this contactor was not present. Sparks at the batteries is not such a great idea so it also serves to reduce explosion hazards.

There is a warning that anyone who uses this wiring diagram should adhere to and that is the THE CONTROLLER MUST HAVE THE HIGH PEDDLE BEFORE POWER UP LOCK OUT ENABLED. FAILURE TO ENABLE THIS FEATURE IN THE CONTROLLER CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH IN WHERE THE USER CAN HAVE ALL SAFETY SWITCHES ACTIVE EXCEPT THE KEY SWITCH WHICH THE USER MAY CUT THE KEY SWITCH TO THE "ON" POSITION RESULTING IN INSTANT TAKE OFF OF THE LAWN MOWER WITHOUT WARNING.

thanks for the diagram yeah, I have a switch right now to kill it, I was just wondering because most riders shut off with the key. Maybe I need a different ignition.

----------

it appears as tho I am a dumb ass and need to get the proper ignition. I currently have a 5 terminal switch. A 7 terminal switch will have the proper pin to plug the coil lead in and kill the motor upon turning the key off.

Hang on a second here before you go too crazy here. Your key has a terminal called magneto, right? Well what is the one thing a magneto does NOT need.... POWER. What is the one thing nothing else on the key switch needs from it.... GROUND. So I'd be willing to bet that when the key is OFF, the ground terminal is connected to the mag terminal which goes to the magneto ground to kill it. I think you have all you need with no additional relays or parts needed.

I will have to look into that. I do have a magneto spot, however, When I first hooked it up I ran the coil lead to the M, a couple cranks and a big poof of smoke came rolling out the top I fried the coil.

I think, not sure on this, that the charge wire from the stator connects to the "M" and this supplys power thru the switch to a) charge the battery and b) supply power to the "L" for lights.

Or, I may have had the charge wire hooked to the "M" and the coil hooked to the "L", that would surely casue a problem, I cant remember now!

Thanks for the help.

note: the coil was $60, dont want to buy another!

Use a meter to check continuity. One lead on ground, one on mag. See it it beeps with the key set to off.
