Default Political Thread....Deaf Soldiers in the Military (Video)

I am posting this because i think its very interesting and i support his cause. I am HOPING that this will be a nice discussion on frf and not some thread where people will insult the deaf communtiy and me....

i am up to hear anything but seriously remember that i myself am deaf and dont need to hear shitty things.

I think its really interesting I would never even think about that. I love TED vids

----------

on top of that he makes alot of good points, he said he can't fight but there are like 300 jobs that don't require hearing nesecarily like he said

Although he makes alot of good points and there are jobs in the military where hearing isnt required to perform youre everyday duty's in youre MOS, the problem, at least in my eyes is that every person in the service is a trained Soldier, Marine, Airmen, Sailor first and their "job" or MOS is secondary. Everyone joining the Army or the Marines ect. are trained to fight and perform in a combat situation before they are trained anything else. Having been in the Army myself i can honestly say that i would not feel comfortable deploying or even training with someone that cant hear. Nothing against that individual what so ever but the Army wont keep someone that cant meet the physical standards (push ups, sit up, running, weight ect) so why should they make exceptions for the disabled? IMO if you cant meet the standards that every other soldier needs to meet than you should not be able to serve. I know for the disabled its probably not as cut and dry as that but its how I feel. If the Army or any other branch decided to allow deaf people to serve I would not protest it but I cant say I would agree with it.

i can absolutely see where you are coming from, and ur right about the secondary part, however i do think there are jobs that shouldnt need hearing, he can definitely keep up with the physical standards

i am not too well aware of the system so i cant offer much of an argument pro or con but i am interested in everyones opinions and thoughts

^^^ This is basically all there is to it. ^^^

I'm all for people with disabilities being given the opportunities that are available to them. But as with any other disability, there are going to be things you just can't do... that's why it is called a disability. Sure there might be 300 TASKS in the military that don't necessarily require hearing. But there are probably twice the number of tasks that DO. Military service is not an everyday job where you get hired for what you want to do and thats all you do. And for that reason, it is just something that is not practical for the deaf.

There are thousands upon thousands of jobs outside military service that the deaf can do. There are even civilian jobs for the military, DoD, etc that you can do if you want to be patriotic and serve your country.

sorry, but if a person with diabetes can't serve in the military, I don't think a deaf person who could endanger themselves and the lifes of others should.
many people are turned down for military duty for a number of reasons - too tall, too short, too fat, diabetes, sleep apnea, leg shorter than the other, legally blind, etc..
i'm not against deaf people wanting to join the service, I just don't think it would be a safe idea.

I can go either way on this. I can see why the shouldn't be in the military because of not being able to be a soldier first, and I can see why they should be in the military and able to preform non-combat duties. But in all reality, my thought is the same as many posted, the military takes people of a certain physical standard, if you can't meet that standard, then I'm sorry you can not serve. Two of my best friends are deaf, I know one of them wanted to serve, but he could not, even though he has special hearing aids that allow him to hear with the disease he has that affects his hearing. His biggest concern was that he couldn't hear well, and who knows what that may have lead to in a combat, or non-combat situation. But like Fireranger pointed out, there are plenty of ways in a civilian capacity this gentleman can serve his country. I'd be all for that.

at least thats the case in the navy. the ships are not designed for people who are extremely tall, or extremely short.
