I'd say that all depends on what platform you want and what the rifle will be used for. If it was my money (and it was readily available), I'd go with an HK417. The HK416 is also quite nice but I prefer 7.62x51 over 5.56x45...but unless they've upped the production numbers, they're pretty difficult to get ahold of.

platform wise, i have no preference over ar, ak, m1, etc. its pretty much gonna be, eventually, a cal legal plinker/coyote/brush gun.

Ahh...I should've looked at your location. The Kel Tec SU-16 and Saiga rifles (unconverted) would be pretty good and I believe Cali legal from the factory.

Look at the Kel Tec SU-16CA. CA legal and seems like a good gun. Ive been looking for one myself. Key word LOOKING. Seems everywere online is sold out. Dont know if you would have better luck at a local dealer.

----------

The SU-16A seems like its a little easier to find.

FALs are fun guns. Arsenal AKs are really nice but expensive. My brother has a Century AK and a Century Draco (AK pistol) and both have pretty decent fit and finish and they function just as well as the $1000 AKs. I really like the M1a SOCOMs (fairly expensive) but I haven't had a chance to shoot one...yet. Mini14s are ok for what they are but they are kind of over priced considering their accuracy.

For hunting I'd probably stay away from AKs and the Mini14 (I'd love owning a few of each), accuracy isn't quite as nice as the AR platform. The S&W M&P 15 is a nice rifle for a decent price. I've heard the Saiga rifles are a bit better than traditional AKs as far as accuracy is concerned.

An M1A Socom would be tits. Agreed on the Mini 14. I was looking at them before the SU and the accuracy ratings on them werent that good. The only thing Ive really seen about the SU-16A model is the sights are supposed to be not that good. Ive heard good things about the C (not legal in CA) and the CA(same sights as C but stock dosent fold) Im still searching if you can switch them up.

the new mini 14s are accurate. The old ones sucked mad balls.

yeah The old MOA of the minis were HORRIBLE

and i dont understand how you can do that with the ballistics of the .223.

they must of had a revelation and figured it was time to reinvent the wheel. because ive heard nothing but good things about the new ones.

The old mini 14s sucked because their tooling was old as shit. But they replaced everything, and the newer ones are awesome.
