To call someone stupid for not wearing one is not right. People have been choked by seatbelts, and taller people sit farther from the steering wheel and windshield and studies have shown that in some cases, although rare, they may benefit more from not wearing one. I feel it is a personal choice not a one size fits all -- eventhough I mostly wear one.

if you get a seatbelt ticket, IMO, your an idiot.
You know from experience that wearing a seat belt does not always help, yet you still call people idiots for not wearing one and getting a ticket. Let me tell you a story. I typically wear mine and was pulled over a couple months ago for making an illegal turn on red. To further explain, I thought it was spring break, and at the offending intersection was a sign that read, "No turn on red school days 8 - 4". Besides the fact that the print is a lot smaller than a typical sign, I made the mistake of turning. I got pulled over and ticketed. The officer asked me for my license and insurance, and I complied. Because I keep my wallet in my front left pocket and not my back pocket, I had already taken my seat belt off. When he came back to the vehicle he handed me a folded ticket for "illegally turning on red" and made no mention of ticketing me for not wearing a seatbelt -- that I had already taken off. His handwriting was slopping and it wasn't until I paid the ticket did I realize I was ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt or I would have fought it.

I was a CHP explorer for 4 years and i've responded to vehicle collision's with people thrown out of there cars and dead in the middle of the road because they weren't wearing a seat belt. I saw to many dead people killed just because they weren't wearing a seat belt. So yes i think you are very stupid to not wear one. If it bothers you that much then i don't know what to say. cry me a river then.. I don't even know i'm wearing one when i am wearing it. And for pulling people over for not wearing them were mostly the older generations because they don't like the new law of wearing one because back then they didn't have to. But a quick ticket made us smile and made them bitch and cry while they drove away

I can understand back in the day when all cars were giant tanks and made of steel. But now days it is illegal in most states. I wear mine by choice and if you ride with me YOU are fucking wearing it. Or you arent getting a ride.

Yea, seat belts are a no-brainer. The incidence of people being saved by seat belts far outweighs the instance of those who are seriously injured by seat belts. Those who were choked by seat belts, could very well have been liable for that themselves, seat belts are now adjustable at the shoulder for this exact reason. Improper adjustment is on them, not the seat belt.

A couple years back I wrecked my '00 Ranger into a tree after swerving due to a driver who crossed into my lane and then ran. I walked away from that accident without a scratch or any pain, thanks to my seat belt. Trees don't move, so had my seat belt not been on, I could have easily been thrown into the airbag, which poses a risk for suffocation, or even into the windshield due to my height. However the seat belt did it's job and I never even touched the airbag.

I always wear my seat belt no matter what, even if I'm just going around the block. It's not yourself you have to watch out for, it's everybody else.

It would be your choice, but the law is not there for the operator's protection - it's for the protection of others. Regardless of whether or not the seatbelt protects you from injury in an accident, a seatbelt keeps you in your seat and at the controls of your vehicle. This 1) maximizes your chances of retaining or regaining control of your vehicle (if at all possible) and 2) minimizes your chances of becoming a projectile hazard to others, either inside or outside your vehicle.

That's why seatbelt laws withstand scrutiny, while helmet laws get repealed - helmets do nothing to protect others, and so their use should be up to the individual, while seatbelts have wider implications.

I voted Yes because I always wear it.
Once, I was gathering firewood on an old forest road on a camping trip. I was not wearing the belt.
I was driving my 1974 Blazer that had the fiberglass top.
The edge of the road gave way and my Fiancée and I were thrown out as the roof broke away from the body while we rolled down a 60 foot hill.
The State Trooper declared the wreck an act of God and said that if I had been wearing the belt I would have been killed.
I kind of agree with the laws and I kind of don't.

Old cars were terrible in crashes, regardless of being made of sheet metal.

New technology makes our plastic built cars better in crash tests then they have ever been. Air bags weren't even required till when, the 90's?

Seatbelts save lives, end of story. It should be a law to have to wear seat belts. You are driving on a PUBLIC road which is a privledge, not a right by any means. If I rear end you and you were NOT wearing your seatbelt, and were seriously injured because you were not, you would sue me for everything I am worth for your medical bills; yet if you had a seat belt the injuries would be less.

Access to public roads is indeed a right and not a privledge.

The Right of the Citizen to travel upon the public highways and to transport his property thereon, either by horse drawn carriage or by automobile, is not a mere privilege which a city can prohibit or permit at will, but a common Right which he has under the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." - Thompson vs. Smith, 154 SE 579
