Default Re: Home project #2: Firewood stockpile

I have Stihl saws, I have to get my brother to help sometimes with the big logs, he has one with a 25" bar to get through them. The guy I use picks the trees up at a local mill, they are rejects due to nails and other junk in the trees so we get it dirt cheap. Right now I burn about 5-6 cords a winter, so I am trying to stockpile it while I can get it so cheap because the prices just keep going up every year! During the summer, you can season wood in 2 months if its done right, but oak takes about 6 months, and if you burn pine, it takes 2 years to season

I just got done piling mine for this winter

I'll burn 4-6 cord but I only use wood part time as I'm not around enough to use wood for full time heat. My father in-law is wood only in Ottawa and burn 12+ cords a year

thats alot of wood clinton... you gotta be careful with log splitters. my dad got his finger caught between the wood and the wedge and crushed his finger almost cut it clean off. and I had a Y shaped piece of wood in one and it was hesitating on splittin it and when it did it popped out and busted me right in my jaw. almost broke it I couldnt open my mouth for hours. sad thing is both of our accidents happened the same day.lol needless to say i/we havent touched one since.

I take it this your primary heat ? Do you use wood chips or pellets or any alternative stuff ? We have a fireplace in the family room , but I use it only on weekends as its not worth it during the week . We are never home and always out running somewhere .

I grew up using them, sometimes you just have to know when to stand back!

Yeah primary is the woodstove. the back up is electric but last time I used it about 8 years ago the bill was 450.00 for one month! The wood is a bit of work but overall I save alot vs the electric

^^Exactly. I hate splitting firewood and havent had too for years now since I live in an apartment (all utilities included so I have gotten real bad about turning down the heat/turning off lights when I leave)
Nice work on the amount of wood though.. you should be fine by the time winter gets here..

----------

Oh and Rich, how expensive is it to heat with pellets? My friend in highschool's parents got one a couple years before graduation and I thought they said it was expensive?
