LOL, are you serious? I know you are calling them a POS because they are a GM product, but wise up man. The LS1 is a powerhouse and started one of the best engine series ever. they have an enormous aftermarket and are super reliable. Don't talk out of arrogance.

ditto^^^ seriously dude. my dads Trans am gets 29 mpg's and run's a 12.49 at 114 mph. its fast as hell, and gets great mileage. its fun to drive, and its loud.... lol. ls1's are awesome with power and reliable. we have had very FEW problems that weren't our fault. but the one major problem was, my dad blew out 2nd gear in it (they are weak in 98's). we tore the tranny down and it now has Viper 1st and 2nd gears. they havnt broke yet and there is 20,000 miles on it, and about 15 passes on it.
Very nice. Stock, LS1 F bodies will run low 13's; you can't turn your nose up at that. They respond well to bolt ons too, 400 hp with headers and catback? Hell yes. 400 WHEEL hp with a cam swap? easy. Sorry, but Mustang GT's of that era were complete turds. As I said before, the 03-04 Cobras are the only worthwhile ones (and they are badass). I love a good 03-04 Cobra as they can make stupid amounts of power easily.

ya, the only bad part about aftermarket shit for the LS1 is that anything you do to them is fucking expensive! since the ls1, and the f body's were stopped being produced, its been hard for mustangs to keep up. even when they were the ones still being produced. you would think after 8 years, the mustangs would be able to finally keep up, but they are still a car length behind in the 1/4 mile.

ya, it gets the job done, lol. its got a couple bolt on parts. texas speed and performance headers, flowmasters, offroad cat (meaning there is no cat), B&M frame connectors, slp line lock, pro 5.0 shift kit, hurst pistol grip with line lock button, slp cold air intake. thats about it. lol.

Yeah, Im serious...Thats awesome that you have a reliable engine that has a bunch of overpriced aftermarket shit for it...But what about the rest of the vehichle? I have a few friends with Camaros and one with a transam...Little things on their cars are always breaking. Not to mention insurance...It would cost him a lot more in the long run to buy a 10-12yr old sports car than to fix the ranger. Not talking out of arrogance, or ignorance if thats what you meant to say.

overpriced? $400 for ceramic coated longtube headers and y pipe is cheap. $300 camshaft is cheap, what is expensive? Little things like what? Any older vehicle will start to nickle and dime you; that comes with every car and age. The only nickle and diming my two f bodies have ever done was a window motor and a thermostat, that's it. If you think a Mustang is going to be more reliable you are wrong. The Mustang GT gave you V6 performance with the cost and fuel efficency of a V8. They were an absolute joke.

haha, yeah. The windows are too heavy for them, only changed it the once with a more powerful motor and it works great now. My thermo went out on my Camaro at 76k miles, so no biggie, but I don't have that car any more any way, someone rear ended it over the winter.

$359 for a fuel pump
$107 for a fuel injector
$163 wheel bearings
$135 water pump

Just to name a few parts that I know my friend has had to replace in the past 6 months. There were other things, those are just the ones that stick out.

Yes, any old car is going to have stuff breaking on it, but an old sportscar is going to have more shit going wrong because whoever owned it previously more than likely drove it like a sports car.

My point: if you want a reliable older car thats good on gas, dont get a sports car.

Are you done sucking off camaros yet?

Nothing wrong with DDing a sports car, and he said he wanted something quick; LS1 does the job easy. Find a car that doesn't have 100k on the clock, or has gone through 3 owners and you will be fine. Your friend sounds like his car has been beat on as most of the guys I know with LS1's rarely have any severe or expensive issues, even when the miles cross 100k.

The one I know with most of the problems, his dad bought it new and sold it to him when he got out of the navy...Its fast, but it sure is nickel and diming him. Had to have the trans rebuilt at 131k and since then, its just been one thing after another.

If you want mileage and fast, get the new V6 mustang. 305 hp twin turbo V6 and like 30 mpg ish? The 5.0 V8 isnt bad on the highway either and is much faster and will be a great car i think like 22-24 highway.

LS series engines are the shit. Im pretty sure they can run like 4 cyl and get you 28-30mpg on highway if you are driving the right way. But good luck finding one in a decent car.

Another option is to look at WRX and Evo.. good speed and 4cyl, so Im sure you can get decent mileage.. or

EcoBoost F150!

The new v6 mustang isnt a turbo though. I like the Evo a lot, but I gas mileage is usually mid 20's for those I believe
