Default Mid-Size SUV For Wife???

My wife and I are preparing for our second child to be born in July. I am wanting to get her a mid-sized SUV with AWD or 4WD. Any suggestions? Probably looking to spend around 7 to 8 grand. I know I'm looking at older SUVs. Just was wondering what others thought. Thanks!

Laurel bought a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 with the inline 6 and auto.
It is a very nice ride - no leather, but it has everything else.
It was 12k wholesale about 2 years ago.

I would say either a jeep Cherokee or an exploder. But that's just my .02 cents.

Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute

No need for an awd/4x4 when there's no snow.

We go up to Flagstaff in the winter to play in the snow and have fam that lives where it snows and go there to play in the snow...and I would prefer her to have it if she goes without me...

we bought a Jeep cherokee when my first daughter was born. By the time she hit 2 here knees were in our backs. Do your self a favor and get something like an expedition/tahoe size SUV. We traded out our cherokee for a 99 expedition with the 5.4, my wife loves it and it has all the room you will ever need. Our jeep got 17 mpg with the straight 6, our expedition gets a solid 16. Damn good trade off for the size

----------

It has the 3rd row which is nice, I took out the single side seat that flips forward to get to the back, it makes it easier to get in and out.

haha

also my mom drives a toyota highlander...plenty of room for kids in the back (only 5 seats though)

----------

i personally hate the highlander but thats only cuz i drive it once in awhile and the learning curve on the shit in that car is ridicoulous but if u drive it on a regular basis..ud be fine

ex: drove it again for the first time in like 8 months and i COULD NOT figure out how to turn off the defroster in the front maybe its like one of those vents that are always open

If you are well equipped with good winter tires, sure.

But with 4season tires, a 4x4/awd will not only increase, but multiply chances of losing control.

On personal experience, i'd much prefer rely on traction control during winter for safe driving.

Plus, with your budget (7-8k), you'll find a more recent and reliable model with 2wd then 4wd/awd, which needs to be cared for meticulously, not a lot of owners do that, which could turn into costly repairs.

But it's only a suggestion, good luck with your search!

Is the tahoe considered a mid-sized suv now?

It's so big.. And nothing sport-like..

it is def not a midsize though but in the chevy field it is lol

----------

i beg to differ on the sport look..i think it looks a little sporty. looks more macho though the tahoe is liek a 2001 or 2000 model

My tahoe is a beast... i wouldnt recommend a tahoe unless its not a dd or else youll end up spending a small fortune in gas.

"But with 4season tires, a 4x4/awd will not only increase, but multiply chances of losing control."
WTF!!!!
Physics dictates that 4 driving/pulling tires will increase traction/tractive effort or tractive force on any surface.
So you are claiming that having a vehicle with brakes on 2 wheels, not all four, is better for stopping???!!??? WTH???!!!!

I'd like a Ranger with 4 wheel drive and Oh, yeah, I would also like brakes on all four wheels too please.

I don't know where you're from (you did not include any info), but its common knowledge here. You're not driving on warm asphalt anymore, the laws of physics you're probably thinking about are much different from the reality of winter driving.

I don't get the brakes on 2 wheels reference. You're mixing powertrain and braking systems. At least it made no sense to me, considering it had nothing to do with what i posted.
