Default back to looking for a bike

hey all. this fall i was looking for a motorcycle, then i got my new ranger and that got put on the back burner. well now im back at it with summer gas prices coming. im looking for my first bike, a dual sport something that i can cruise back and forth to school, cruise town, and hit the fire roads and single tracks every so often. im trying to keep it cheap 1100 or less, preferably much less. and i want to keep it under 500cc, need time to learn and get comfortable before stepping up to a litre bike.

these are 2 that ive been looking at close to me. any thoughts or opinions

honestly these bikes are cool, but you need to realize that a bike this old is going to have a lot of problems especially in your price range... if you spend a little more and get something a bit newer and what not you will have a lot less issues...

----------

but the xl250 looks a lot cleaner, the 350 has mods which could lead to reliability issues.

If your looking for something under 500cc, id get a super motard, like a yz450f, crf250, ktm450f. They have alot of power, super light, and get great gas mileage. It would be perfect for driving to school and town. And they arent that expensive either.

thats like 3-5 times his budget... but they are fun bikes, a 90s xl or drz would be perfect.

i guess its more of a patience thing at this point. just hunting craigslist and ksl.com while saving money and eventually ill find something. i might have to bump my range up to 1500 and 650cc. theres a number of decent looking bikes around but its committing to taking a 2 hour drive to look at em. and if a see a really good deal i have to be ready to strike immediately

look at getting a drz400. thats what im looking to get, but i want the drz400sm. they are fun and fast bikes. lots of bottom end but not very much top end. i think they only top out at about 110 mph. if you get the S model, you can go and hit the single track and ride trails when ever you want. then if you really want, you could spend about another 1500 on the supermoto conversion kit and go run track days at your local road course track. and honestly, i wouldnt get a liter bike for a good long time. i would do the dual sport, then get a bigger dual sport like a dr650 or a ktm 650. ride those for a summer or two. then get a 600cc sport bike, maybe ride that for 3 summers. then step up to a 750 and ride that for a couple summers. then when you are more responsible, and have gone down plenty of times (trust me, you will go down, i dont care how long you've been riding.) and you can afford a liter bike, go for it. just remember, there are two types of bikes, ones that have been down and ones that will go down. keep us posted

i here ya man. i figure by the end of may i will have a bike. maybe by june. depending on the dough situation. but money shouldnt be a big problem since i make $14hr and i still live with my parents and i have 5 major things i have to pay for each month: beer, car insurance, gas, and phone bill, and groceries (i basically eat turkey sandwiches for lunch every day, so its cheap. lol). there have been way to many 65 degree days here and im getting impatient as well. lol. all i can think about everyday is "bike bike bike bike bike bike bike bike bike"

those are good bikes, i know a few people who have them, they run forever, and are good learning bikes. the only down sides to them is they are a bit heavy and bulky and they are a lil gutless compared to other 250s, but none of that is really that pertinent to you.

good bike, shitty mpg's. i know 70 mpg's sounds awesome, but when you look at it from the size of the tank, its shitty. i think those are 2.5 gallon tanks, you can really only go about 130 miles, if you baby it, you can go about 150.

honestly a 250 might get 200 per tank if he babies it, i had an old xr 250 that had dual carbs and a leaky pep**** valve that could ride aaaaaaaaaall weekend on a tank. plus you might have to stop a lot for gas but you could just about pay for it with a pocket full of change instead of taking a second out on your house like you have to with a truck...
