If they don't pass a budget by 11:59pm Friday (tomorrow), then there is no federal funding for anything starting at 12:00am Saturday morning. All non-essential, non-law enforcement, and non-emergency government employees and contractors will be immediately furloughed... which is the fancy word for ordered to stay home without pay. Any all business those employees and contractors work for or support will be closed. Nobody gets paid. Nothing gets done. And this continues for the duration of the bullshit until they pass a budget.

To put this in perspective there are 320,000 federal government employees and ~100,000 government contractors JUST in the Washington DC Metro Area. I'm estimating here, but non-essential, non-emergency, non-LE personnel is probably 1/3 to 1/2 that. This puts over 150,000 people out of work with no pay just in WDC metro area, INCLUDING ME.

And it trickles down. All the buisness in DC that those 150,000 people shop at all the time (lunch, office supplies, transportation, etc) have their daily business slashed. Nobody working = no customers. All of us that get furloughed lose money that we aren't going to spending on other things elsewhere. Guess what, I probably have to cancel plans to go to VT for a long weekend in the spring since I won't be able to afford the train or gas/tolls. Amtrak, the service stations, and toll booths lose my income.

It is the peak of spring touism season here right now. Every federally managed tourist attraction here will be closed. The entire smithsonian. Every monument and memorial. The national zoo. The US Park Service. WMATA predicts a 20% drop in commuter revenue. All the small local business that feed, hotel, and transport turists lose it all.

So no, it isn't some silly no-big-deal reduction in hours. It is a HUGE deal with an effect that will fuck up the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in and out of Washington DC.

exactly-

it with mess with a lot of people. myself included. i hope that i am an exempt employee but you never know. atleast i am not in kabul or somewhere else right now.

----------

i would like to add I feel sad for all of our military folks abroad right now. for all you guys out fighting stay strong and stay safe.

I personally think, they should use the politicans salaries to pay for Military and govt officials.

MILITARY SHOULD GET PAID NO MATTER WHAT!

It is... I'm in the Navy & we checked MyPay this morning.... half checks are already posted there. It's better than nothing... Time to start working on projects i have the parts and stuff purchased for already... Maybe my ranger will get rear mustang discs this weekend. I have the custom made stainless braided brake lines and the rest of the parts sitting in the garage...

Yea its already been posted up. My supervison was claiming that we will be paid up till the 8th of our April check but after that we would have to wait till the shutdown is over.

Excuse me? A taste of the other side? Which side would that be? My rent is $2,035/mo. My mortgage on my old place that I can't sell is another $1,210/mo. It costs me another $175/mo to commute to work everyday where I work anywhere from 9 to 11 hours a day everyday with no overtime. And even on my time off, I'm still doing work related email and phone calls all day long, for free. And then when I'm done with all that, I get to watch an entire 1/3 of my pay be deducted in taxes to pay for people who don't want or care to work at all.

So, if a lot of people think they have it a lot harder than government workers, maybe a lot of people should go fuck themselves, or maybe they should actually try harder if they think they're present job is so meager.

Maybe you don't comprehend how this works. Here in the real world, not whatever young dumb and don't know better world you're in, people have bills to pay. And when we don't get paid for the work we do, we can't pay our bills. For thinks like a HOUSE. FOOD. GAS. ELECTRICITY. You know, important things. The only one that needs a wake-up call is you.

And BTW, guess who still gets paid and has a job through this whole shutdown? The politicians that caused it. They get paid. They get to work. And the rest of us get fucked.

----------

Umm, no. I'm completely right. I'm talking about the shutdown and who it effects. None this political bullshit you're babbling has anything to do with that. You are harping on the budget once it passes and which side is right. I'm talking about how the rest of us are going to get fucked in the meantime when they don't agree on something and the shutdown happens.

I'm so sick of you and everyone else on the planet's political arguing back and fourth to no end. Neither side gives a fuck about anyone else but themselves and as a result everyone else in the world gets fucked over for all of your egos.

Seems like you over extended yourself. Paying a mortgage on a house plus $2000 rent? You need a lesson in fiscal responsibilty along with our congressmen.
Government shutdowns a have happened in the past and will happen in the future, quit acting like this is the worst one.

Ok. We can argue about it on here all we want but until everyone gets up and march to Washington DC in a huge massive march then nothing is going to happen.

I'm talkin bout a massive march with pitchforks and torches and a rope with a noose in it.....just like the ole days.

You might have a point if you had any clue what my income and other financial situations are. I'm not over extended. I'm living within my means like everyone else. And all my spare money goes to paying down the mortgage and into retirement investments.

It's not the worst one. It's the current one. You wouldn't be questioning why it upsets me if you're paycheck might stop next week. Don't act like you wouldn't be the least bit annoyed if someone said "Hey BTW, we're not paying you next week."

Look at it this way troops like me who have families and use the military as a single inome are a lot worse off than you right now.

I don't see how this is worse than working in the private sector.

Oh yeah, job security and the knowledge that the gov will resume paychecks very shortly.

The fact people are freaking out with the possibility of incomplete paychecks and short term unpaid time off just shows how disconnected they are from reality.

If you don't like it, quit your cushy gov job, and come play in the real world, where responsible people plan ahead, not weekly.

This is not the end of the world, life will continue Monday. Here is what I care, they get the stupid crap under control enough to open up the offices. My gf is air force, and well anyone willing to serve this country in a combat theater, needs to get paid, no matter what some fat politician thinks.

Not everyone has that option my job sure as hell isn't cushy but is "gov" I just had a child my savings are sitting around my house right now crib, bouncer and other stuff. I for one look at this as an oh shit moment. If you think all the jobs are cushy come try and do my job for a week working 12hrs+ with no weekends and no overtime. Think we are hidden from the real world? Your hidden I knew way the hell more about libya attack than you ever will. I work my ass off for my family for what I was told was a guaranteed paycheck. Personally I think you can fuck off.
