If they don't pass a budget by 11:59pm Friday (tomorrow), then there is no federal funding for anything starting at 12:00am Saturday morning. All non-essential, non-law enforcement, and non-emergency government employees and contractors will be immediately furloughed... which is the fancy word for ordered to stay home without pay. Any all business those employees and contractors work for or support will be closed. Nobody gets paid. Nothing gets done. And this continues for the duration of the bullshit until they pass a budget.

To put this in perspective there are 320,000 federal government employees and ~100,000 government contractors JUST in the Washington DC Metro Area. I'm estimating here, but non-essential, non-emergency, non-LE personnel is probably 1/3 to 1/2 that. This puts over 150,000 people out of work with no pay just in WDC metro area, INCLUDING ME.

And it trickles down. All the buisness in DC that those 150,000 people shop at all the time (lunch, office supplies, transportation, etc) have their daily business slashed. Nobody working = no customers. All of us that get furloughed lose money that we aren't going to spending on other things elsewhere. Guess what, I probably have to cancel plans to go to VT for a long weekend in the spring since I won't be able to afford the train or gas/tolls. Amtrak, the service stations, and toll booths lose my income.

It is the peak of spring touism season here right now. Every federally managed tourist attraction here will be closed. The entire smithsonian. Every monument and memorial. The national zoo. The US Park Service. WMATA predicts a 20% drop in commuter revenue. All the small local business that feed, hotel, and transport turists lose it all.

So no, it isn't some silly no-big-deal reduction in hours. It is a HUGE deal with an effect that will fuck up the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in and out of Washington DC.
Not quite right. I have friends in certain places that told me a different story. Basicly you are partially right, but they aren't going after the military, law enforcement, and present contractors. Basicly the democrats are fighting it because the new budget puts a freeze on their salaries and limits the amount of money they can get in the form of "EAR MARKS". Every democrat that's in congress today fought it tooth and nail and they lost because the other side controls congress now. Basicly it will become next to impossible to get a government contract that isn't military/defense, or law enforcement connected. They've already cut back on hours and closed offices that weren't needed months ago. But I fear the worst is yet come. This only the beginning.

For all the people saying it woun’t be bad, don’t worry, just a few days with out work/pay must have lots of money in their mattress or something.
I am a government employee working directly with/for the airforce and all though I make a good living I don’t get paid that much. There are many non gov. employee out there doing the same thing as me for a lot more $$$. There has been a lot of talk about how over paid Gov. employees are well let me tell you they don’t.
My income is equal to most high school teachers and other typs of jobs, BUT wait I also get deployed with the military to great places like Iraq and Afganisan with bombs and bullets always a concern.

As many people with midle class income I need every $$ I get paid, so even two weeks with out a pay check means 1 month with out bill money.

So I said to all the nay sayers, if it isn’t that bad see what the public would if Walmart shuts down across the country for two weeks or more.

(p.s.) thanks for moving me post.

Excuse me? A taste of the other side? Which side would that be? My rent is $2,035/mo. My mortgage on my old place that I can't sell is another $1,210/mo. It costs me another $175/mo to commute to work everyday where I work anywhere from 9 to 11 hours a day everyday with no overtime. And even on my time off, I'm still doing work related email and phone calls all day long, for free. And then when I'm done with all that, I get to watch an entire 1/3 of my pay be deducted in taxes to pay for people who don't want or care to work at all.

So, if a lot of people think they have it a lot harder than government workers, maybe a lot of people should go fuck themselves, or maybe they should actually try harder if they think they're present job is so meager.

Maybe you don't comprehend how this works. Here in the real world, not whatever young dumb and don't know better world you're in, people have bills to pay. And when we don't get paid for the work we do, we can't pay our bills. For thinks like a HOUSE. FOOD. GAS. ELECTRICITY. You know, important things. The only one that needs a wake-up call is you.

And BTW, guess who still gets paid and has a job through this whole shutdown? The politicians that caused it. They get paid. They get to work. And the rest of us get fucked.

Umm, no. I'm completely right. I'm talking about the shutdown and who it effects. None this political bullshit you're babbling has anything to do with that. You are harping on the budget once it passes and which side is right. I'm talking about how the rest of us are going to get fucked in the meantime when they don't agree on something and the shutdown happens.

I'm so sick of you and everyone else on the planet's political arguing back and fourth to no end. Neither side gives a fuck about anyone else but themselves and as a result everyone else in the world gets fucked over for all of your egos.

These ass monkies in office can't seem to understand that their own STUPIDITY AND GREED IS WHAT'S DESTROYING THIS COUNTRY. Watch and see if we don't end up like Russia did in the early 90's when the soviet union fell apart. If you remember, they were paying their teachers with Vodka and potatos and a loaf of bread would cost you a week's wages (if you were lucky enough to get paid in cash). That's how we'll end up. The USA bankrupted and destroyed russia's military without firing a shot. Now china is doing it to us.

He didn't say he hates his job. If you want a job with better benefits, then earn one. He and I have good jobs and work our asses off at them to earn what we get. You apparently think it should be just given to you? Fuck you.

If you hate your job so much, then quit. Its not my fault or anyones fault but yours that your rent is so high. Maybe you need to downgrade or get some room mates. I understand it sucks to not be paid for a week, but think about the people who arent shit heads collecting unemployment and govt funding that just cant get jobs cause of the way the economy and such is right now. Right now, its just me and my mom, and shes 56 with no college getting waaayyyy less than 40hr/week. We cant pay our mortgage...or get a lot of food....or the cell phone bills...i had to move out to live with my dad so i wouldnt be such a burden....shes trying to sell our place too to pay it off...not gunnna happen. Probably gunna get foreclosed on.

And you know whos fault all of that is? Hers. Poor financial decisions...shouldve went to college bla bla bla.....Know what there is to do about it? Deal with it. Yeah it sucks but you guys arent the only ones. Your jobs are coming back. So you might be a little late on some bills this month. There are people out there with little to no hope. There are people who have it worse than the both of us. A

All im saying is that things could be much worse and your acting like the world as you know it is going to end.

----------

Fuck me? Fuck your white collar government working ass, you probably have no fucking clue what its like to be flat ass broke and hungry. I wasnt gunna get nasty and insulting with this but youre obviously a stuck up prick. Boo hoo you cant afford your lush condo or whatever the fuck your living in for 2035 a month. Get over it dude your job is coming back you need to man up.

Just curious Matt, why are you paying $2K in rent when you have a place you can't sell for half of that a month?

I'd seriously punch you, you're such an arrogant ass. I love my job. I work my ass off at my job. I have the lowest rent in the area, in a very small 2 bedroom apartment. There is no other option. So fuck you again. Sorry you family made poor decisions. Boo hoo. I made good decisions and I work my ass off to earn what I make. And thanks to this bullshit, I'm going to get fucked by no fault of my own. Your family's poor decisions are their own and I don't care or have a shred of sympathy for you or your mother. Too bad, so sad.

So you think because your family is suffering due to their own poor decision making, it is perfectly acceptable for those of us who haven't screwed up our own lives to suffer too. Spread the suffering around? Maybe you should sell you big fancy new truck and buy a more economical used vehicle. Speaking of poor decision making.

Work took me to the DC area where the rent is >$2000/mo everywhere. My old home was in CT where I owned a small condo in my small town.

Easy now gentlemen. No need to get nasty with each other. both of you make vallid points. You government guys need to calm down and breathe a bit. Yeah your about to to work for less and sure that pisses you off, hell who wouldn't be. But what the other guy is saying is that be glad you've got a job cause others have lost everything and have no hope because of something happening beyond their control. Fast food jobs are now being occupied by people my age and don't want to give them up because there's nothing left to go to.
