Default Smoking banned indoors

Yesterday the citizens of Springfield passed a ordinance that you can not smoke indoors other then your house your car or selected hotel rooms.

I am curious how this will end once law suits are filed. All resturants, bars, night clubs, bowling allies etc have I think 60 days to meet the new "law"

I dont smoke and dont see that it is fair. I also dont really like going to a place filled with smoke. I know people will say well stay away from places with smoke. If I did that then fast food places would be my only choice.

O also you can buy beer or wine at one of the 5 movie theaters. Which was really odd to begin with.

I find it to be disgusting and noxious. I'm glad. People who smoke should take these constant subtle hints. That said, it is definitely debatable whether it is any of the government's business to be doing this.

they did that here in west virginia a couple years ago. pretty much the only place you can smoke indoors is in our casinos (which we voted against!). i think it hurt the bars some because when you go in a bar, you expect to smell smoke. its a bar. but it did make the restaurants better because there is now no smoke smell at all.

I would not have an issue with them making a "smoking room", but then servers would have to volunteer to work in that room. If I go to a restaurant, I don't go to get secondhand smoke, I want to eat and not deal with it. Even if there are "smoking sections". The smoke gets everywhere. So, I am for the ordinance. Illinois passed it a few years ago, and the places I go where it used to be smoking, the air is even better now that it isn't. The town I live in, instituted an outdoor smoking policy, where the smokers have to be 25 feet from the doors.

Its been like that in NC for two years. At first it was an uproar about it not being able to smoke in a restaurant and all, but now everything is fine. At some places you cant even do it right outside the door.

I think it is right, there is no sense in nonsmokers having to put up with that nasty habit. I dont smoke and dont expect to have to breath it in when im eating, or even period.

What really sucks. The people for smoking are gonna sue the city. Which the city is laying off people and can't afford a suit.

Also it was not the city doing it. Clean Air Springfield got signatures to have it added to the ballot. So wouldn't that mean they are after the wrong people?

Michigan has had the law working for about a year.

There was a lot of up roar at first about it, but now everyone is adjusted to it. Most of the bars around here made a "smoking deck" and had tables and stuff outside for the smokers. Heaters outside in the winter.

The few times I have been in a bar this past year have been great. I am not coming home smelling like an ashtray and coughing from smoke. I think bars are getting as much business as they did before. People are still going to want to drink, even if they have to go outside to smoke.

Why would people sue the city over the new law? It is a waste of time, money, and just stupid. It was a legal petition, signed my residents of the city to put it on a ballot. Then the residents of the city, voted on it in a legal election, passing the law. The smokers and bar owners dropped the ball. They should have been campaigning against the law before the election. It is just stupid to sue over it.

X2 on that! It wasnt really a bad transition either. Of course, Im a non-smoker. But didnt really seem like there was to much uproar over it.

It is nice to go to a resturant sit down and eat without smokers in building. Even tho the sections are seperate, I could still smell it.

They also made it so you have to be like 25' from any entrance to a building. I think 25' maybe more

the Indoor smoking ban was passed here in MN back in 2004. no smoking in any building that is public use. ANYWHERE. this means churches, schools, shops, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, even private clubs. (health centers, etc) I always thought that was funny, someone going to a health center then walking out and lighting a cigarrette.
i'm a non smoker so i love the smoking ban!
however, since the then ban, over 500 businesses have closed.

one local well known DJ, Tom Barnard, Had a caller on, just after the Smoking ban was passed. the caller said it was his right to smoke wherever he felt like. Barnard, who tells it like it is, said: "Sir, smoking is not a right, it is a privledge. There is nothing about smoking in the Bill Of Rights"

I would rather see them ban alcohol in public places. Drunks kill more than smokers.

It was done here a couple of years ago. I find it absolutely glorious.

Some people did try to sue the state, but they lost.

besides, drunks are not a health concern to other peoples. A drunk on the walking down the street is just a drunk walking down the street. A smoker walking down the street is poluting the air of everyone else walking down the street.

Colorado has the same laws. Its great. Now that I think about it, if you were to reverse the law, and allow people to smoke in certain restaurants/bars/exc, I believe it would effect a lot of those businesses. I for one, would NOT go back to those places.
