Cleveland, Oh wants to take the law a step further by making it illegal to smoke outside in public either at a city park or office building. I think that that is wrong. It is bad enough that with the world the way it is that politicians have nothing better to worry about than smoking.

You can't smoke in any restaurants, bars, etc. here anymore. The law says 35 feet from an entrance, and now they want to say house or car only.

That is pushing it. How do you enforce it?

BTW, I'm an ex-smoker.

I like the approach AZ is taking, $50 fee if you're a smoker and are on State Medical. Should be NO state medical if you smoke.

The thing with this is. The city had nothing to do with it. Citizens for clean air got enough signatures on a petition. So it could be on the ballot. So politicians are not at fault this time hahaha.

Missouri in the next state wide vote will have a vote. If you get government assistance you have to take a drug test.

I know some states already do it or are considering it.

Problem with that statement is that most drunks don't walk down the street. They get behind the wheel of a car and kill people. How many times do you hear about car accidents and nicotine involved? Never. Even regular accidents, never. Distracted, yes -- eating, drinking, changing CD's, cell phone, etc. Air pollution is mainly by us burning fossil fuels -- nearly 70% from cars, planes, businesses, and residential (for heat or garbage in rural areas). Other air pollution is nature, like 25+% - wind, acid rain, soot in the air carried from factories, cars, etc. Less than 5% of the air we breathe is tainted from cigarrette smoking.

Its been this way in California for, I'm pretty sure, forever. At least San Diego. I smoke, however, I do it only outside. I'd NEVER even consider smoking indoors. It seems gross and, frankly, a fire hazard lol. I rarely smoke in the Ranger, and when I do, both windows are down and there is an air freshener involved
Even outdoors, I smoke downwind of my non-smoking buddies and chew gum afterwords.

I'm a smoker but I'm glad that the law was passed. The state governments that passed this law knew that there were pros and many financial cons. Yet they sided with a law that acknowledges a non-smokers right to not have to inhale nasty sooty air against their will, just to accommodate someone else's personal choice.. So to me it shows that humanity is still a big part of government decision making, and there aren't a whole lot of examples of that. It's the right decision and it's inevitable.

The ban on indoor smoking has been in Washington state for something like 5 years, and Montana for two. I think it sucks for people that smoke, but honestly I think it is for the better. I hate smelling like an ashtray after seeing my friends out at the bars and that. I am not against an outside smoking area though.

The one place I didn't mind the smoking indoors was a bar called The Beacon in downtown Casper, Wyoming. It had a good enough ventilation that it was clean inside. But I'm sure there was still the second hand smoke effect.

ohio just passed a statewide no smoking before I moved in 08

Maine, where I live now has had a smoking ban in the workplace since 1985, in '93 it went on to ban public placings, '99 included restaurants and '04 included bars. Just recently in '09 they added state parks and beaches
