eh i bet if you look up the facts, smoking kills many more than alcohol. not to mention smokers are one of the main reasons health insurance costs so much.

the following is quoted from the CDC (centers for disease control and prevention)

Quote:
More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined
http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_stat...ted_mortality/

I disagree to a point. You don't become impaired from smoking a cigarette (unless it's your very first one), but I would say it's distracting if you were to say drop it on the floorboard or something similar.

i can play devils advocate with this topic all day, from someone who used to smoke.. it used to piss me off when i smoked and they banned it in bars. its a BAR, thats part of the atmosphere. On the other hand, I hated smelling it in restaurants, even when i did smoke.

As a Canadian , specifically from Ontario , we have had no smoking in public places for years now . As a smoker , I am actually happy that there is no smoking in public places .While it did take some getting use to , once people did , it became the norm .
I enjoy going to a restaurant / bar /public venue and not have to cut through the smoke

Iowa passed that law years ago, there was the big uproar that all the smokers would get pissed and sue, and they would be smoking indoors before the years end. it happened that the non-smokers outnumber the smokers and the law stayed and still stands. It has actually been a great thing. to go to a bar and get blitzed and only feel the effects of the hangover in the morning and not feel like you have had a thousand smokes jammed down your throat. actually it has made a nicer atmosphere and increased bar customers because now people who would not go out because of the smoke will. smokers have a nice little patio so smoke on. buttom line it increases buisness and does not actually hurt it.

----------

to add i fully agree with mazdaman, we've had it in effect for so long that its the normal day to day life.

and i agree with the laws, if somebody doesnt want to smell the nasty smoke, then they shouldn't have to.

We have somewhat similar laws here in TN, which I must say I love.

I have bad lungs, cant be around smoke, but I will not tell anyone they cannto do it. \

However, I hate having to walk into a building, especially here at school, and hold my breathe because these people refuse to acknoledge the no smoking sign right next to them.

In Ontario , you have to be 30 feet from public access doors , also all hospitals do not allow smoking on there property including your own parked car on hospital property .
In my case , if I am smoking in an area that I am allowed ( ie 30 feet from the door ) and a few non smokes come out to enjoy the weather and one of the non smokers asks politly if i would mind not smoking while they were there , I will put out my cigarette or move further away .
In your case , you have every right to ask them to butt out , they are in a no smoking zone , I would even say it to them and I smoke
