People can't afford insurance with no job either. Yes there are lazy people.
I know people who have not worked a real job in 2 years. They have not gone to a doctor since they lost insurance.

I play with trains and I love it. I don't see railways cutting back anytime soon, traffic here at least is picking up and we can't find enough people (at least the ones that can piss in a jar and pass). The hours do suck because it's on-call work, but the pay more than makes up for it.
And Canadian health care isn't bad. If my employer didn't cover it for me, I'd be paying only about $60/month for myself. I think families are around $200/month but don't quote me on that. I've never had any issues seeing my doctor. Might wait a couple weeks for non-urgent tests and procedures but no complaints from me...

You could go in to the Navy and become a mechanic, pipefitter, steamfitter, boiler maker, etc.
Learn to solder, braze, weld, thread pipe, hydronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, heating, cooling, refrigeration, torch cutting, etc.
Learn how to service, repair, rebuild pumps, chillers, heaters, AC units, etc.
Learn how to design, layout, fabricate and install piping and/or tubing systems.

I am a Steamfitter - we do it all.
I have worked in paper mills, food production plants, a high pressure chemical treatment facility (vessel pressures exceeding 60,000 lbs), office buildings, schools, manufacturing and production plants, etc.
Right now I am working at IDT in Hillsboro, OR. We are installing a reactor and all of the supporting equipment. I've been designing, laying out, bending, installing and orbital welding stainless steel tubing for two months. Prior to this, I was at LinearTech in Camas, WA. doing similar work.
We also get to design, fabricate and install piping supports and hangers - angle iron, square tube steel, I beams, etc.
We get to rig for crane lifts and operate boom trucks.
Every job is different - every pipe or tube is different - every crew is different - every job site is different - every shop is different -
I love what I do.

Do the career assessment deals that schools usually give and do internships with jobs....

That's what I did.

I'm an HVAC mechanic and love the sh*t out of my job. Done tons of things not many get to and feel well on my way to owning my own company some day. I've only been doing it for 5 years now and still wake up excited to work. It's rarely boring because I go to a new job every couple of days. I have to use my brain to charge, calibrate, test, and troubleshoot the machines while getting a pretty decent work out too, as it's not going to install itself.
My advise Cody is to think about what you want in life, really want. House, kids, boat, all that and what you're willing to do for it.
Nurses do definitely make bank, my sister is a nurse and wracks it in; comfortably bought a house less than a year out of collage.
Tradesmen don't do too bad for ourselves either. There are a bunch of trades out there that will give you the benefit of being self-paced, ie: the more experience and knowledge you have the more you get paid. Great trades to look into are Heating and Air, Crane Operator, Electrical, Tower Climbing, Blah blah blah. Think about it like this. If it's big or people just don't throw it away and get a new one, someone fixes it.
I've also heard that most route driver's can do very well in their careers. UPS, Fed Ex, Beer Dude etc.
Get a job that involves something that is interesting to you is my best advise, also don't think that the choice you make now will necessarily be what you do for all of your working years. You'll never be stuck if you're willing to work for what you want.

wow thanks alot everyone.

yea im not too interested in medical/EMT stuff but it would be a good option. Have considered the military but am kinda half-half on that.

I have thought about diesel mechanics and thought it would be good to get into, especially with all electronic components in everything anymore.

I really like the idea of apprentice ship and do like the idea of going into a trade. My dad is in the sheet metal trade and i like the kinds of stuff he does but idk if id want to do it as a job. the ones i was actually considering looking into was HVAC or steamfitting.

im not really going out to make a million bucks but i just want to find something that i can make a decent living doing

Schooling for RN here takes a while too. Two years of pre reqs and two years for the program itself. And depending what school there is a waiting list to get in. That's why I'm a cna now and going to get my emt in the fall just for shits and giggles. Might help knowing emt for me though since I wanna be an emergency room nurse.

Depending on the hours you can make 50k to 120k a year.
The United Association ( I belong to UA Local 290) apprenticeship is 5 years and you work through it. Class is only 2 nights a week, 4 hours per.
Millions? 50k a year x 10 years = 500k 30 years = 1.5 million...
100k a year x 10 x 30 hmmmmm.....

I say go into criminal justice field. Some agency's will hire you as a trainee pay for the academy while you draw a check. You could be a Correctional Officer , Law Enforcement Officer, Probation Officer. All very dangerous jobs but all can be very rewarding jobs.

Totally forgot to mention steam/pipe fitter. My uncle is one up in Canada working as one. Works 6 days a week, 10 hour days, around 4-6 months a year. He makes loads of money, like well over 100,000 a year. Not to bad for a High School drop out. There are hazards to it, and long hours if your willing to work them. I wouldn't count on getting in without a diploma anymore, but it's another job to look into.
