I good rifle would be a Marlin 45/70 guide gun. Lever action. Easy to carry, easy to use. And the 45/70 will take on anything Alaska can throw at you.

Shot gun, I have a Benelli Nova. I would say get a pump shotgun. Less chance of problems.

For a hand gun everyone has their own preference. Depending on what your plans are and what you are comfortable shooting.

The best advice is to just be familiar with the guns before you head out. Shoot them and practice with them. Get yourself comfortable with each one.

Also you might want to check the route you want to take to get up there. Canada might not let you in with the guns. Just check and makes sure before you head out.

Bring extra ammo with you, I am sure it will be more expensive in Alaska.

I certainly agree but it takes a special person to be able to shoot one beyond 100 yards with a carbine and 150 with a long rifle. One can boost that by perhaps another 50 yards using Hornady ammunition.

.45/70 government ammunition is not as readily available as .30-06 either and is more expensive.

I'll say one word as far as the handguns: RUGER.

I was either going to say Ruger or Walther.

I carry my Ruger every day, have for over a year now. I wouldn't rely on anything else with my life on a day to day basis other than a glock or smith & wesson. I've carried my glock, smith, kahr, colt, rock island and h&k but by far my favorite carry pistol is my SR9C(ruger). For the money, ruger is the way to go.

I'm not familiar with handguns but would recommend the 30-06 if you want a rifle. Small enough that it doesn't rip up smaller game (deer) but big enough that it takes down big game with one shot (ie moose, elk). I don't hunt bear but I know people who use it for that, and one of the guys at work has taken down a grizzly with one.
If you're living deep wilderness you're better off packing a rifle, handgun won't do too much against an agitated grizzly.

I'm debating between the Ruger SR40 and a SW.40 revolver.

That's what I'm thinking too, but the odds of me being stupid enough to go out in weather cold enough to mess up the gun are extremely low.

I'd just like to have more than 6 bullets at once. 15 just sounds better.
