Default at a big crossroads

Right now I'm taking welding at a tech school to become more skilled at welding than i am now, though my original idea was to go to college to be a mechanical engineer. Another thing ive have a problem with was i've wanted to serve my country, and thought heavily about joining the army, and ill keep changin my mind about joining or not, so i decided to be a firefighter.
WELL, things are startin to mess up with my plan, since i've had to drop my firefighter internship for college, and a job i just got i pressin my hours at class.
So im at a time to make a decision. Either i stick with this and go to welding and work, or go to college while im young and get a good degree for the future with mechanical engineering?
Also, i still want to help my country, i really want to join the army, just a little...scared about such a big decision(being honest). I know if i joined and had hope, i couldt afford college pretty easily, then go off after 4 yrs to serve, or should i serve first and then go to college? idk help me out here guys!

If you join the army, most of the time they will pay for your schooling. You could become a mechanical engineer in the army too and they would probably pay for that. Im going to college full time right now for mechanical engineering. Good luck

In todays world, an education is almost a must. But i really dont know how much they pay for. I think sometimes they pay for it all. My best friend is in your situation right now. He wants to join the army, but he's in college too. He went an talked to a recruter, and if im not mistaken, i think they were goin to pay for the rest of his school since he is almost done with his AA degree. And if you enter the army with a certain amount of college credits, you go in as an officer

hmm that sounds pretty good, ive already done two quarter's worth of credit at this tech colege, maybe thatd help to. the college you want to go to has to accept you before you can do army funding right? or is it diff? if i do change to go back to mechanical engineering my parents might flip lol, but maybe in a good way.

I dont really know about the army funding. The best thing would probably be is go and talk to a recruiter, that is if you really want to join, because once you give them your phone number they never stop calling you lol

just and FYI if you tell a recruiter to stop calling you i think they legally have to stop or else it could be considered harassment

Having collage doesn't make you a officer off the bat you have to go through Basic and then go to school for it, if you have a degree when you come in you can earn rank and come in as a SPC. Now if you finish school and get your degree the Army will pay for your student loans if you come in to finish you will have to go to a home based collage offered there on post or near it. Its great to be in but here is a warning they just booted a bunch of people they are not really hurting on people right now I would advise if you can to go through collage and then join up I cant remember off hand what the TA per class or semester hr is though.

I'll admit i dont really expect to go into the army as an officer, the guy said that was just a possible perp, so im ok with that. And im not planning to "finish" school since i didnt really start it yet, since if i did go id start out as a freshmen and would be beginning my whole college education. Thanks for the warning though! its very helpful, i mean i'll take all the advice n stuff i can get since this is a big deal for me!

The great thing about college is that you can take whatever classes you want to take.

If you want to be a mechanical engineer, then do it. But while you are doing it, why not become a certified welder? Think about the welding courses as your relaxation, you still have to think but you won't be doing all of the major studying that you will be doing with your engineering classes.

Plus once you are certified you can get a job welding part-time and go to school too.

I love welding, the thing is though is that my welding class would be an hour away from the college i'd want to go to, and they have one, id just have to wait for 2yrs or core classes before i took it :/. i have welders at home so maybe while im taking core w eh i come home i could weld there, people around my place sometimes ask me to weld so it'd still be a good release with a litte $$ thrown in. i'm callin the college saturday and see talk to them about it.
