Well the wife and I just bought a couple of entry level mountain bikes and immediately noticed the discomfort we felt in the seat area after riding for an hour or so. Everything else seems great. So, do any of you guys ride and if so, what should I be looking into for seats? I have done some online research already but I would really like some feedback from actual experience. For reference I'm about 5'6 wife is at 5-5"1. Thanks.

mountain bikes r supposed to be tough seats
id say go umm avenir i think they are called my gf has them on her bike and she likes them they have the same fit but are comfy or you can do cruiser seats which have no business on a mtb but to each their own!

i always use hard seats cuz im a serious mountain biker and rarely just cruise i do sores sometimes though ;(

Yeah and all the seats that claim to fix that problem don't. I'd love to know the answer to this as well. A 30 mile ride on the C&O tow path down there does not feel nice.

Yes. We bought mountain bikes but, when we ride together it usually ends up being more cruising type of riding. However, me and some friends do ride some pretty challenging trails so I kind of need something suitable for both.

Go to a local bike shop that sells Specialized bikes. They should have this thing there called an "ass-o-meter." Seriously, it measures the distance between the imprints that the bones in your butt make on some memory foam. From that measurement, they can tell you what width of seat will fit your butt.

Invest in some "GOOD" riding gear. A set of pants or shorts will have the padding in the "area you are getting sore" There are also gell coated seats for mountain bikes as-well as gell pads that you can attach to your seat. You will also need to have the bike "FIT" to your size. This will not only help with comfort but will also make your energy being spent much more efficient
Lookup a bike shop in your area, I'm sure you will find a solution.

YES!!!!! bike shorts with the padding in them will make a HUGE difference!!!.

like i said above. def get shorts. they will make the ride so much better. i know this from experience. i ride my XC bike all the time. weather its on the trails, or riding around town. i can not empahsize how much better they feel. go spend $25-$50 on a pair of shorts instead of $50-$120 on a seat. you will be amazed as to how much better your ass will feel. also, how your sitting on the bike makes a big difference also. how high are you sitting? raise the seat up so that you can almost get a full leg length in when you pedal. that will make it so you are using less energy and more comfortable. raise it so your knees are barely bent. i highly suggest investing in shorts instead of a new seat. just out of curiosity, what kind of bikes did you guys buy?

x2 on the shorts but don't buy the inexpensive ones - spend as much as you can afford. The reason your bottom is sore is because the soft tissue down there is "bruised" and the only way to get rid of it is to build up a tolerance. I went through many seats and my favorite one of all time has no padding at all - just plain old leather that I have molded over time with my butt.
Have fun and ride as much as you can - makes you feel like a kid again!
