Saftey is depended on the dog. Most dogs love it. My basset hound loved it. Except for bad weather I would put her in the cab, because she was terrified of it. She jumped out once while my dad was going thirty due to lightning. Other than that most dogs love riding in the bed.

I drive around with my dog "Scout" in the truck bed all the time. I have never had a problem with him jumping out or putting his feet on the bed sides. But I did train him to do this first. For my set up I used a ratchet strap across the bed with a bungee cord, with this he is aloud to move freely from the left side or the right side depending on which lane the hot girls are in.

Hell I've had dogs ride on a flat bed with out being tied up to anything and I've no problems. I depends on the dog tho. I only let small dogs and pups ride in the cab. It does make me mad when people leave dogs in a bed with a shell on it because it is just like leaving them in the cab and it gets really hot. I Almost 4got to say that there is NO WAY IN HELL A WET LAB IS GETTING IN THE CAB OF MY TRUCK!!!!

As for me, I kept my dogs in the bed of my truck daily. The only instance in which one ever left the bed unintentionally was when i forgot they were back there and went through an automatic car wash with the brushes.. One of them jumped up and bit the brush while it was spinning and it yanked him out of the bed. Ooops..
hahaha. Nice. My dog has always rode in the bed ever since he was a pup. he always gets clipped in. He loves riding back there. he waits outside by the tailgate sometimes. Hell if i leave the tailgate down during the summer he sleeps out there in the bed.

I let both of my dogs ride in the bed and no, I don't usually tether them. It's not that I don't care about them (they are spoiled rotten, trust me) and it's not that I think that if they jump out, it's a form of natural selection, I just know that they will NOT jump out. Trust me, I have tried to get them to jump out when it's stopped. I've parked on the street next to side walks and people walked their dogs right on by and Flint and DD never even barked. I've tossed the ball or frisbee with the tailgate up, and all they did was watch where it landed, though if they are out of the truck they go nuts! The only time they do is when I drop the tailgate and even then, I almost have to drag them out. The bed is their home, and they enjoy it.

I also let them ride in the cab a lot. My back seat is almost always covered in hair and again, it's harder then hell to get them out of the truck (extremely easy to get them in though).

They don't ride in the bed when it's cold out and they don't ride in the cab when it's hot. One thing I've noticed that I'm pretty happy about is they don't go near the box at all. I've seen some guys dogs riding on top of their tool boxes and it freaks me out! At least my dogs are short enough that they have to stand on the wheel wells just to look over, lol.
