Default Any plumbers in here? Bath faucet question...

I've got an older house. built in the early 70s. My project for this week is dealing with my leaky guest bath. It has the 3 handle controls. The diverter works somewhat but half the water comes out the tub faucet and the other half comes out the shower head.

I pulled out the valve today and found that the washers are non existent. The seat looks completely gone as well.

Lowes didnt have valves like mine or washers to fit. Before I go everywhere looking for my valve stems to replace all 3, can i upgrade to the newer type valve? I wasn't sure if that was possible or if I was stuck with my old school valve. Any help would be appreciated.

Lowe's is notorious for not carrying useful washers & o rings for faucets... that way they can sell you all new stuff at 100x the price.

If you can find washers/seats that are bigger diameter than you need, get them & trim them to fit with a dremel or sanding block.

Chances are that you'll have a really hard time finding new stems that have the correct threads to fit the old faucet too.

If you have a small mom-N-pop hardware store near you, they're more likely to have something that will work.

It helps to know what brand faucet it is. You might look thru here and see if you can find one similar...

you are better off to replace and upgrade to a newer more efficent. and will not leak. i reccomend replacing it unless you are looking to get that "old" or "rustic" look. onoine of my custormors house this was happening and i took the old out and cut the copperpipe 8in down and put flexpiping (may cost more but is worth it because it is less appplicable to leak from weight in the tub pusshing or pulling the copper lines.) and then i just hook up the new fauset. but if you want to try to rebuild the one you have im pretty sure my book will have the ring if you want

Just one washer on the stem. The seat should be faced with a facing tool. If the seat is chewed up it will wreck the new washer and it will leak again.

Well, I replaced the whole damn thing. decided itd be worth it in the long run. pain in the ass...i cut out an access panel in the hamper, ripped out the 2x4 holding the faucets. saw that all the pipes are soldered and not threaded. i cut all the pipes and used adapters to put threads on the pipes. hooked up new assembly. Heres the kicker...i accidently knocked a tile loose, no biggy until i realized how much mold was behind it. old valve had leaked all in the wall and saturated the sheetrock. i got all that pulled out and cleaned. i bleached what was left. here is the pics of where i stand now. looks ugly but no leaks and all i need to do is put back some sheetrock and do some tilework.
