Default Selling Ring - Need Advice

So I've decided to sell my engagement ring. I'm not a pro at jewelry at all so I'm hoping someone here knows something and can give me some advice.

It's a 1.03 carat round solitaire and it's I1/F ratings. It's mounted on a 14k white gold band. It was appraised at $3,700 but looking on eBay it looks like they're going for closer to $1,600-$1,900. Locally on craigslist most people are selling them for even less. Obviously I want to get the most out of it and going off of eBay the ones that are GIA certified are listed closer to $3,000-$3,600.

What I guess I need to know is where's the best place to sell these? I found an online diamond forum that has a classified section but there isn't much variety on there and they advise not buying anything that's not GIA certified so I don't feel like I stand a chance. Is it worth it to pay the $150 or so to have it certified? I'm ok with it if I KNOW I'm going to get a return on the investment... any help would be great. Thanks guys!!

So the drama goes like this... he took the ring back before we broke up. After we broke up he gave it back.... 12 or so months later I gave it back to him, and 18 or so months later he gave it back to me. Done playing that game... I'm selling the bitch.

You do need to get it certified - if you don't, why would anybody even look at it?

Get it graded and certified. Pay the money to have it done to get the most out of it. As long as you have the paperwork from a legit company you will be good. Send it to a top of the line place or take it there yourself, if you go to a cheaper "we grade cheap" places most likely you wont get the same gem back

I would stay local if possible. You're never going to get retail, but bring it to a handful of jewelry stores and see what they offer.

One jewelry store told me it wasn't even worth his time... it's kinda the bottom of the barrel but IMO you can't tell with the naked eye... I was thinking about sending it to GIA themselves (CA). That's where I got that $150 from. I have all the paperwork from the original jeweler (and it has a trade-in value there equal to the appraisal) so I was hoping that would be good enough...

Are you going to give him the money back for it or keep it?

If you are going to keep it, why not just trade it in to the jewelry store it came from and buy yourself something nice from the store.

That way you don't need to go through all of the hassle of ebay or craigslist.
