All Jettas have available diesel engines. Have you ever driven an HHR (homo hot rod)? They have the worst blind spots ever. With your 5k budget, an MP5 would be awesome.

i say stick with accords or corollas- corollas have non-interference motors so if the timing belt pops, just throw another on

Can you name a modern interference motor? I though those were no longer made.

i have owned quite a few used cars, my sonata 2.4 is a mitsubishi engine and is quite reliable all the while getting 39 Mpg. if you go VW avoid the 2L at all costs, pos imo. honda accord 2.2 or 2.3 are very good, or the honda civic 1.6 1.7 are really relivble. the corolla 1.8 or even the echo yaris 1.5 are the most reliable engines out there. but like other people have said and mp5 is great, the 2l in there is a great engine.

My girl has had a 2006 Sonata and now has a 2010, both 4cl and they're great cars. I bet they're still above his budget though.

Look at a 1994-1996 Buick Roadmaster, we have like 3 of them. They have LT1's, which is a corvette engine. So it looks like a granny car but it hauls ass, seriously it doesnt mess around. They get good gas milege, and are super reliable. We have never had any problems with ours.

I don't know how popular Saturns are in the states, but you might consider the Saturn Ion sedan.

It's an american company, but most of the car is german (as in made in germany, not inspired from) from Opel. They are cheap in prices and they have the legendary 2.2 ecotec engine paired with a getrag transmission. The polymer pannels are a plus too if you hate rust.
