I hunt with 3". The difference in length of shell is (depending on which shells you buy), a bigger load of pellets, but also a larger charge of powder which equals more force and velocity. Much better for bigger game.

when i was selling guns i would tell buyers to stay away from the newer mossbergs. their quality in construction has dropped so baddly in the last couple of years that i have traded off the last of my mossberg guns and only deal with remington's. i will never look back from that decision either.

----------

to add to the story i was trying to mount a scope to my model 500 for deer hunting. but the factory drilled holes were off. and i mean off. on the 500's there are 5-7 groves on the top of the action. hole one closest to the barrel was cetered with grove one closest to the left. hole 2 the middle hole was centered on grove 5, and hole 3 closest to the stock was off in void space. there was no way to mount the scope rail or even the slightest chance of sighting it in. i checked 5 more that i had in stock and all of those were off as well. moral of the story is remingtons cost more, but you will get a much better weapon overall.

I would go with the 870. It seems like there is a lot more out there for them too.

For an everyday shotgun, get the Remington 870. Go to local gun shows and get an older used one. You can usually find them in good shape anywhere's from $150 to $300 depending on the options and mods done to them

My first shotgun was an 870 I bought for $200 brand new...approximately 7 or 8 years ago...nowadays they sell new for around 285 + tax...which really isnt too bad, I've never heard of them rusting though.

I remember a few years ago when a new 870 was less than $200. They are great guns. I have had mine since I was 10 years old and it has been reliable and a great gun. In the way of shotguns Remington is my choice.

this is one i was thinking of getting, remington anyways.... this is the one if handled and really liked it. i find the camo terrible so thats a minus, i guess. the single sight isnt that bad since i know bass pro carrys mountable rear sights. id go with bass pro cuz there aint a cabelas near me out here in southern california... yet.... i like this model because the barrel is long enough for waterfowl, yet short enough for the woods, or so ive heard. the stock would definantly go and be replaced for a hogue overmolded. i love the traditional look of wood but god forbid i drop it in the water.. uhhhh, id never here the end of it. and being around boats my entire life, i know what water will do to wood. i talk so some family and they said the 3 1/2" are in a way worth it. i can see this for turkey and geese. other than that i think id use 2 3/4" slugs for deer, varmints, and small pigs (im talking small as in under 60lbs or so, if im going feral bore hunting i want a marlin big bore lever gun at hand....), and other 2 3/4" and 3" for whatever else.

if you do not like the camo on that just get a regular 870 express or an 870 wingmaster. they are the same gun, that one is just camo dipped for turkey and waterfowl nothing special about it. also you can always add choke tubes and barrels. i think i have three barrels for my 870 and somewhere around 5 chokes. simple 870 express will work great for what you want.http://www.remington.com/products/fi...0-express.aspx
exact same gun as you posted. i mean exact. the wood would be fine if you drop it in water just dry it off. disassemble and let it dry. you would have to do the same with the synthetic stock. also you could order it with a black tacticle style stock.

i think id have the thing dura-coated just to be safe to for go any dislike in color.... the 3" chamber, like you suggested, would probably leave me better sound of mind knowing the bolt assembly is less pieces than the 3 1/2" chambered 870. i like the hogue stock for two reasons, one im short, there fore i have short arms, the 12" lop is nice. two, since the lop is shorter i can put a nice recoil pad on it. to add to the water scenario, any firearm show be disassembled and dryed, which is what i think you are thinking.
