Default lawn mower battery help

I have a newer battery in my John deere. It shows 14.6 volts initially on the charger then drops to 12.7, this might just be the charger...idk. My problem is the charger is showing full charge but the battery will not crank the mower, it just clicks like its dead. Is there something to do with the amps not being there, even tho the volts are...?

I have taken my Gel Cell battery from my sportster and have been using that and the mower starts every time flawlessly, I just like to start my bike once a week during the cold and its getting old swapping batteries all the time!

Of course it shows 14.6 volts when the charger is on. That's what the charger is supplying while its trying to charge. Dropping to 12.7 after the charger is removed is normal as that is normal voltage for the battery. The battery is just toast. If you put a load tester on it, it will fail. Time for a new battery.

Sounds like it's probably a bad cell or two in the battery.

Pop the caps off and make sure its full of water first, but its probably bad if its old.
The charger has to overcome the resistance of the battery, so that is why it charges at 14V instead of 12V.

I used to work at a hardware store and we'd get back batterys all the time for the core and all we had to do was fill with water and they'd pass a load test.

Charging rate = 14.2 to 14.8
Battery is a 12 volt so voltage-12.X
X can be in the range of the charged battery @ 12.0 which is low to 13.6 which is a little high . All depends on the battery ....

I guess what I want to know is just because it shows 12.7 volts does not mean that the battery is good....?

I let is sit on the charger since about the time I posted this up, I tried it in the mower and it turned but extremely slow for about 14 sec. this is an improvement over just clicking.

I will buy a new battery but Im so sick of these junk batteries, this is the third one I have bought. I want to spend the money and buy a Gel Cell Battery for it. I guess I will just have to keep swapping my battery back and fourth for now!

Thanks for the input guys.

Huh??????? Voltage is not a rate and the rest of that doesn't make any sense either.

Batteries charge at a voltage of 14.2 charging rate
the maximum charge of the battery is around 13.2 volts .
Maybe rate is not the term to use but it helps explain it ....

Maybe a better description here :

A modern automobile has a 12 volt electrical system. A fully charged battery will read about 12.5 volts when the engine is not running. When the engine is running, the charging system takes over so that the voltmeter will read 14 to 14.5 volts and should stay there unless there is a heavy load on the electrical system such as wipers, lights, heater and rear defogger all operating together while the engine is idling at which time the voltage may drop. If the voltage drops below 12.5, it means that the battery is providing some of the current. You may notice that your dash lights dim at this point. If this happens for an extended period, the battery will run down and may not have enough of a charge to start the car after shutting it off. This should never happen with a healthy charging system because as soon as you step on the gas, the charging system will recharge the battery. If the voltage is constantly below 14 volts, you should have the system checked. If the voltage ever goes above 15 volts, there is a problem with the voltage regulator.
