Pat-I was on Ali Al Salem... It was in 09 though... I used to go to the LSA( Army, Marines, Aussies what not) and get some Desert Diamond... Had a friend go there and did nothing but complaing... For a first deploy as weird as it mat sound I loved it there... Bagram we have to carry rifles even though there not sighted or anything lol... We are cargo people who we gonna shoot?

Brian- Yea I told her that comunication was gonna be a key thing... She needs to tell me things thats bothering her or what not even if she thinks its gonna stress me out. I was thinking about sleeping with it and what not... and keeping it close for a while...

Haha Bru- We talked about it today and she kinda sounded like she didnt think it was going to work... I told her I wanted it to and since thats what I wanted I believed in it... She came around and feels the same now... I said what you said... Gotta be in it 100 percent... No bullshit... Oh and the didnt have the sand ninjas on base( The women with the gown things)

Jason- Didnt see any of those northern folk but I did work with Aussies and Brits.. WAIT I do remeber a Canadian guy comming in for something but I cant remember what for...

Lol, I was stationed outside of Doha for my deployment. Probably the nicest base you could be at when you would see Army coming in for RnR.

Arifjan is a perm Navy base I believe... Not a deployment... I think you gotta take a bus from Salem just to get there

What you're doing is so much greater then me, but i thought my experience might help a little bit. I'm from California and go to college in Connecticut. The biggest thing for my relationship is communication, even if its not about anything important just talking. Skype and iChat have definitely played a huge role in keeping things working! I'm actually sitting in the airport right now on layover in Vegas waiting to get home and see her. It's been since August 4th, so not quiet 6 months, but its an extended period of time. How i looked at it was, why not try? What will it hurt by trying? If you don't try then you will know for sure it will never work. But getting through things like these almost always makes relationships that much stronger! If you both want it to work, then you guys can make it work.

I also did the teddy bear cologne idea. Went and built a custom build-a-bear, and since i play football i put him in a football uniform with my last name on the back... Sprayed it with her favorite cologne and gave it to her the day I left. I think it'll mean alot to your girl!

I know our situations are totally different, but i thought my opinion might be a little beneficial!

I've never been in or dated someone who was in active duty but my boyfriend lives on the opposite side of the country so a lot of the same rules apply. Since I'm a girl I thought I'd share my side. First off, do the teddy bear thing but do this... spray it &/or sleep with it for at least 2 weeks, then put it in a bag and put that in a box. Give it to her and don't tell her whats in it but tell her she has to wait like 2 weeks before she can open it. I looove having things that smell like my boyfriend but they make even more of an impact when I've gone some time without him.

I agree with what everyone else says... communication is key and routine is very very important. Because of the time difference he starts work around the same time I wake up in the morning so he's my alarm clock and it's a great start to the day. Skype is the best invention since post-its. You really start to miss seeing their reaction (facial expressions, facepalm, etc.) so it's a really great way to keep from staring at a wall. I'd also mix it up. If your primary communication is email then send a letter without telling her.

What you have to do is way worse than my situation but giving her something to rely on is soooo important. I can't tell you how much easier it is knowing in 6 hours you're going to get that call/email.

Good luck!!
