every now and then I go full retard. I had just finished listening to Eminem and he made a reference to Michael J Fox, and that's why I thought of the joke. In retrospect, it was rather distasteful, and disrespectful. My apologies

Christmas cards are one thing. Birthday cards, Christmas, etc should be cards.

Invitations on the other hand, not always.

I'll explain, my whole family gets together for at least Christmas eve every year. We're talking 30-40 people plus a few add ons here and there.

That's a lot of cards to get out, and even harder to get them all back. They do a big Facebook announcement for the party and everybody can confirm or not, discuss what to bring, the directions to the house, how to get past the security gate, etc...

Why send a card, just to get a phone call back with questions and a confirmation?

That's definitely an acceptable application.^ Our family is on the smaller-average size (11 people at our get together) and to use Facebook for that would be dumb. We just make arrangements at Thanksgiving then usually exchange a text or phone call or two for confirmation of certain things. If you have 30-40 people getting together I can see how that would become a burden to talk to everyone about arrangements. But otherwise, it's your family, talk to them.

This is coming from someone who uses event pages all the time for car meets and stuff like that. I think they (event pages) are a wonderful thing and have proved to be quite useful in the past for organization and spreading the word, but to me using them with your family seems weird since you (should) already know everyone on pretty much a personal level.

Plus, who here has a couple relatives whom when you call, it's impossible to get off the phone in under an hour?

We have a bunch of those in the group. That's a whole weekend of phone calls. Don't ask how I know

I know how that can be. I don't have any relatives like that but one of my mom's friends, never fails. The only landline in the house is in my room and she'll sit on my bed for so long talking sometimes...

My wife & I are the same we still send Christmas cards, although the list is dwindling. If you can not at least pick up the phone & call me to say hi, do not bother me with a damn text.
