That is so damn gross.

Thank you. That actually means a lot.

Contrary to popular belief (at least for me) soldiers don't get thanked very much. People just ask if I've killed people and then criticize me for being a soldier.

It means a lot that you think that about me.

Anyone that doesnt respect you and what you do, is a *******. They forget about the soldiers that fought and died to protect their right to be so stupid and disrespectful.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion I think. I just shrug off the criticism. I know what it's like to live this life. To shoulder all of the burdens that we protect them from. Am I going to let all of that go just because of what they're saying? No. I'm going to smile and keep holding the line. Because that's my job. To hold the line. To kill the oppressors of freedom. That is my job. And in proud to do my job. I'm not proud of what I've done. I'm not proud of killing 38 people. They had families. They had wives. Children. Fathers. Mothers. And I took that person away from them. Am I proud? No. Would I take it back? No. I do what needs to be done. I'm just losing myself. I'm not who I used to be. I'm distant. I'm distracted. But most of all? I'm terrified. I'm terrified of everything. Cities scare me because of ambushes. I won't drive near guardrails. I can't watch fireworks because they remind me too much of explosions. I'm terrified. I am a scared man. Lol. But I still fight. Even though it terrifies me. If anyone who has seen war, tells you it doesn't scare the ever living shit out of them, they're lying. War is terrifying. It's ugly. It's brutal. And it's unforgiving. War is fucking nasty. But yet, I am in a job that is the very impersonation of war itself. My single directive is to kill. When I leave base, I come back with less ammunition and a body bag. That is my job. And it's terrible. It's bad. It's terrifying. But I still do it. No matter what anybody else says. I will always do my duty. I feel obligated to defend The great USA after all she has given me. I feel I owe her everything. I'm not afraid to die. I'm afraid to die without a cause.

First off, I'm a US Army Infantryman. I'm a Sergeant and a squad leader. I have some combat tours and a Purple Heart and a bronze star.

When I was in Afghanistan on my second tour, an ambush came onto my squad and killed 3 of my friends. That was my whole squad. I came out with shrapnel in my leg and a collapsed lung. I got a bronze star for getting back to camp being chased by Taliban for 15 miles.

Ok. So, this whole story was of course spread around the base. My new squad members caught wind of it. Not a single one of them trust me. They are disobeying orders that come from me and consequently I was flamed at work. Really bad. I was threatened with demotion. If they're not straightened out after this deployment, I go back to corporal.

On top of all of this, a Cavalry scout rammed an Abrams while in a Humvee on base yesterday. He was on drugs. So he's been dishonorably discharged. For some ******* reason, I was the one sent to tell his family. I'm not even in his UNIT. It's hard as hell to see the news you're telling tear a family apart so my much. My day was shit. And on too of EVERYTHING else, my old injuries are starting to hurt. It's probably just stress from the thought of going back. I'm having nightmares every night and waking up in cold sweats. Breanna is trying to help. But I can see its killing her to see me so torn up. I just don't know what to do anymore. Don't get me wrong guys. I love my job. But I've seen so much death.

I've killed people.

People look at me different.

I hate what my job has done to my life. But at the same time, I know it's what I NEED to do.

I just don't know what to do.
First off let me say thanks you for your service. And man secondly let it out, dont keep it bottled up let it out even if its just here on FRF. Your story reminds me of the book THE THINGS THEY CARRIED, about Vietnam (a great book so far). This may sound funny to some, but in all seriousness have you ever considered writing a book or short stories?
