I've got a 4x4 and I couldn't imagine life without it. I've never got stuck in snow or ice (YET) unlike a lot of the guys here, I don't take mine off-roading, unless somebody parks on my driveway & I have to go through the grass.

That being said, I'd love to have a 2wd exactly like my current truck too.

My 4x4 sets high & my drive has a dip in it... sometimes when I get out, I'm like 3' off the ground.... it would be nice to have a lowered truck to I wouldn't need to strain my back getting in & out.

It all depends on how much snow you get and how well your city does with snow removal.
I keep to 2wd on the main roads here. 4wd once I hit the side roads, they rarely get plowed.

The argument over 4x4 vs 4x2 can go on forever. I have driven both in the snow. There are 3 major factors with driving a 2wd in the snow, weight, tires, and control.

1. Weight is important, evens out the weight of the truck.

2. GOOD snow tries are a must and not just on rear axle. All 4 corners need good rubber. Maybe not snow tires on the front but it needs to be a good gripping tire. The street tires that people like to put on 2wds are horrible in the snow.

3. You need to drive in control. That sometimes means slowing down and taking your time. A lot of people who complain about driving 2wds in the snow, make the mistake of driving like the do in the summer time, you need to change your driving style sometimes to stay in control.

In reality unless you drive in 4wd the whole time you are in a 4x4, you are still driving a 2wd.

I have both. Just bought a FX4 a year ago. Been wanting a 4x4 for quite some time. Have had a Mazda 3.0L 4x2 since 2000. Living in a snow belt region (annual average is 2.34 m or 92 inches). One winter my Mazda got stuck 10 times on a set of BFG AT T/A KO with several hundred pounds of sand bags. Had to put on tire cables numerous times. Got a set of studded winters; was stuck only a few times. After that, a 4x4 was on my shopping list. The Mazda has been parked during the winter.

After a few "interesting" moments with AdvanceTrac, I typically turn it off in winter and when it's wet.

2WD are useless, simple as that. Sure if you are gonna haul trash or something, that's fine. But my saying for a 2WD truck is:

Quote:
"It's like a dog with no balls, what is it going to do?"
Im not being harsh, but I have owned a 2WD Ranger and sure it was nice, but i HAD to upgrade because it was becoming useless.

I LOVE not having to worry about putting heavy stuff in the bed just to make it out of my driveway when it snows, being able to go out on the beach without having to worry (too much) about getting stuck, and just being able to get where i need to go in inclement weather.

Sure with 4x4 there are a few more items added that can mess up, like the transfer case and stuff, BUT the benefits outweigh that on so many levels. You usually hear that phrase from someone without 4x4 lol

hahaa you've got a point there! thanks for being honest.

As i said, for a first truck and for $800 i'm not gonna kick myself over it being 2wd. within 2 years though, i plan on getting a newer ranger that has 4x4. you guys made me sure on my decision lol

2wd isn't useless, and 4wd isn't for wussies! Come on children! If we all liked the same crap it'd be kind of boring wouldn't it! I have a 2wd and a 4wd, I have a 2wd 3/4 ton at work too. They all have purposes and they all should be used for such. I love getting out in the back country, as much as I am a city kid, I'm a country boy too.

I'm a big believer in buy what you need. Soccer Mom's do not need *insert large 4wd SUV name here* as much as idiots don't need huge effin trucks to show how big their family jewels are. You build a big 4wd use it, you want to lower a truck, use it. Simple as that. I'm a closet mini van fan, ok I'm not, I love mini vans, I want to body drop and air bag one to take people cruising! But that's just me. And for the haters, I have taken 2wds places that amazed me, and I used to be hardcore 4 by or nothing. My first truck, my GMC that I still own is 2wd, has gone all over in the snow. It's what's between the seat and the steering wheel that makes all the difference.
