Paint on my Harley...follow up
So I have decided I want to do a charcoal grey color with urban camo flames along with the POW/MIA logo.
I guy quoted my $750 for 2 fenders and 1 tank.
$200 for each copy of the POW/MIA logo
$700 for show room clear coat/finish.
For a grand total of $1650.
Is this even in the ball park for paint on tins for a sportster...?
I was thinking like maybe 300-400 at the most.
I understand that the urban camo flames can be tedious but that sure does seem like alot.
Anybody have any thoughts on this....?

Re: Paint on my Harley...follow up
bike painters charge crazy amounts, I charge $500 to repair a tank, single color... my price wld be close to that.. which I use all high end paint products that are very expensive. BASF products, Dia-mont, Glasuruit, R-M... used on Ferrari and Lamborghini.. but if you shop around, shld be able to find someone to do it cheaper.

avg price
$200 for each copy of the POW/MIA logo
air brushing on avg' is $100 an hr.
$700 for show room clear coat/finish.
premuim clear cost big money. wet sanding n buffing takes time.
For a grand total of $1650.
I wld do it for $1000-1200

what kinda bike doeant matter, taking one apart and reassemble does
I was thinking like maybe 300-400 at the most.
Dupont, HOK or BASF products he'll have that much in material

if he doesnt have templates, can be a pain.. it's cake for me
Anybody have any thoughts on this....?
find someone to do it cheaper and hope that you're satisfied

Re: Paint on my Harley...follow up
Thanks for your thoughts there, I honestly have no idea about paint on bikes. I told the guy I would be stripping the old tins unless it would be better if he did it. The tins will be off so it not like I am bringing my bike to him, just the tins.
Is there a difference is clear coates? I mean do I have to get the "showroom" or can I just get something that the gas drips will not eat the paint?
Also is there an option at all to have like a vinyle graphic put on, like the camo flames put on over a black tank, then have it sealed/clear coated...? would that even be possible...?
Its not a show bike or a chopper by anymeans so Im not looking to make it into that! lol
----------
Also, I would not be affraid to pay this cost for an excellent paint job, I would rather not pay say 800 and then have gas drips eat it off, or have blemishes in the paint or have the camo look like a cow! lol. I also understand that in most cases you "get what you pay for" and if you go cheap you will probably get cheap. lol

if around the filler neck isnt prepped properly gas will crawl under the paint a ruin it. yes all clears are different. I prefer BASF/R-M clears over any other brand. I wldnt recommend vinyl under clear, it will work, but will not last long. logically thinking, I wldnt spend money to have something done and expect it to fail in the future. do it once and be done with it.
if tins are in good shape, no need for stripping, you're causing more work to be added. like etch priming, then 2k priming, then sanding, then paint work begins.. if tins are in good shape (chip or 2 no biggie) then the suface is already sealed, sand then paint work begins...
----------
if you want to ship the parts to me, (I'm doing a fatboy just recieved tins from AZ).... get a qoute for shipping, London Ky. 40744 and we'll work out a deal. I'll hook you up. with no hassles. I will include return shipping in the over all quote,,, but I need some info first.
what color is it?
what color do you want ground coat?
what color do you want camo? urban camo is black white n grey
I'll need pics of emblems you want.

Re: Paint on my Harley...follow up
I guess I would just want the front and tank, since I have bags on the side and that year harley has the big ass tail light in the middle of the rear fender, theres not much of it to see.
The tank is in excellent shape, it does have a very small dent on the right side of the cap about were the tank starts to round.
The fender has no chips, cracks or dents.

ever think of trying to get an aftermarket fender for the rear? ive seen a sportster with an old soft-tail style rear fender that looked pretty good

dang id say you got your moneys worth from it haha but i dont see any rear fender conversions for it.. i do see some licence plate relocation kits, if you moved that to side then you could have a POW MIA logo right where the licence plate was

yeah, well I have thought about a wide tire kit for it, kinda expensive tho, I don't know if its worth it or not. lol
My dad bought this bike in '97, he rode it from may til october everyday. Rain or shine. he put the miles on. He bought an '08 fat bob this year and gave me the sporty. I only logged about 2k on it since I have owned it. lol
The day I rode it home the belt broke. go figure. And it needs new tires this year. But that belt lasted 100k+ that a hell of a ways!
