Good to know your opinion. Now I know to disregard anything else you say in this conversation.

Now guys back to my original question. Anyone with rock river armory 1911 experience?

Yes you can.

Never. 1911s suck.
I'm an XDm and Glock fan as well, but calling something that's been where the bar was set for nearly 100 years is a bit of a bold statement. I don't carry a 1911, (not that I wouldn't pack a Kimber for my daily carry) But a properly maintained 1911 is a fine personal defense gun. Granted I can cram 20 rounds into an XDm but lets be honest, do you think you're going to drop your gun in a swamp in the middle of wal-mart, or that a freak sand storm will whip up while walking your dog blinding you causing you to drop your 1911 in a buck of muddy/sandy/internally tight binding material? Lets be real, anything after the first 2 rounds in a gun fight is a pacifier and most of us aren't door kicking with our concealed hand gun.

Would I take my 1911 to Afghanistan and bury it in the dirt for weeks on end, no I would probably take a Glock. That doesn't mean that the saftey of a non-overpentrating .45 round in a crowed area automatically trumps a 9mil for every area.

Most would agree that we can depend on our guns with our lives and we want them to go bang when we pull the trigger, but if you're saying that a well maintained Kimber is crap compared to your Glock.....I would beg to argue

If it's not a duty weapon personal preference plays a lot into what we carry....

I've never heard anything terrible about them, mostly people complaining that don't maintain them, or expect to burn crap ammo in it right out of the box.

I have a buddy that has one, and he hasn't had much of an issue with it, it's a bit picky in regards to what ammo you use. Hollow points are hard to find that run smoothly is the biggest issue. There was some stove piping in the first 100 rounds after he bought it, but that's almost expected with a gun that new. (And he wasn't shooting high quality ammo)

My .2 cents, if you can afford it, run a couple of boxes of target ammo through it then start finding what works for you and the gun. Once you do cycle a few mags of what you plan on carrying in it through the gun to ensure things will be okay....worst case scenario you may have to have the feed ramp polished a bit, or if you're handy you can do it yourself

Thanks! Appreciate the input. I kind of bought it on impulse and didn't think much of it until later when I was looking for reviews and saw a lot of good but a not quite insignificant number of bad.

Do research on effects from a .45. There's a video where a doctors doing a presentation on effects of gun shot wounds. Take defence classes from ex contractors and military personnel and you'll understand why .45 and 1911s are out dated. Your argument on "it was the bar for 100 years you can't say its junk" is completely comical. If that's the case you probably ride a horse to work. Does your ranger have a carb in it? Do you own a smart phone? If so something set the bar for far longer on all those things. People develop ideas that better products and they do replace older versions. If you can name 1 thing a 1911 does better than a Berretta, Glock, or XD I'll admit you're right. Until then I'll stick with the past experiences I have, and lessons I've learned from others to come to the conclusions of 1911s sucking. 1 thing you'll never hear anyone who owns a .45 say is that they may miss! If you're being fired upon by some thug with 19 rounds and you have 8 are you going to win???

Had a few 1911s over the years. All very accurate, when they would shoot efficiently!

Ok... But how many people carry a full size Glock with 17 rounds? Not many. Most people carry a smaller single stack gun. I own a lot of different handguns, but my 1911 is still my go to gun. Its reliable, accurate, and I happen to like the .45 defensive rounds that are available today.

On another note, how often do you have some thug firing 19 rounds at you? Most SD situations occur at less than 6 feet, and certainly dont involve 19 rounds. Lol.

Eh. Its common, but I dont know how you couls say its one of the most common. I personally know more people that carry single stack Kahr's or revolvers than glocks.

Can you show me these statistics? Who published this and where did they collect the data? How many self defence situations have you been in where 1 shot was fired? Not discrediting your "source" but use common sense. If you were walking to the store and 3 men walked up 2 with a gun and 1 with a knife. The first step is to retreat behind cover with your weapon ready. Let's say you first managed to get cover and were being fired upon. Now let's do math. You use 3 rounds to suppress them. 6 to neutralize each target and you never missed. That's 9 rounds. Now say you missed 3 shots. That's 12. Miss 5, 14. That's 2 1911 mags but you'd still have ammo in a double stack. I've seen amazing ballistics results out of corbons 9mm rounds. And if you don't need more than 4 rounds and are in such close quarters why not carry a super short shotty???

During the whole December fiasco why do you think Glock had a 17 year back order calculated and I could still get revolvers and 1911s at my local gun store?

If you were still able to get a 1911 then youre local gun store must have been extremely well stocked. Meanwhile what I saw the most of here was used Glocks and used revolvers. No 1911's anywhere.

And all you gotta do is look those statistics up. I think you're a little too hung up on the hollywood style gun battle. Lol. Thats rarely how it actually happens.

And so a 9mm round has good ballistics. .45's have them too. And a 9mm may or may not expand to the size of a quarter, but a .45 will always be at least a .45. Thats why every self defense expert out there recommends that you carry the biggest caliber you can safely and accurately shoot (within reason of course. Lol).

Btw, if the 1911 is such a useless gun, why is it carried by experts like Larry Vickers, Massad Ayoob, and Marty Hayes?

If someone needs 19 bullets to hit a person, they shouldnt even be allowed to hold a gun. It's all about shot placement of that 1 bullet. Not about how many you can send down range.

1 bullet to the head or chest will do better than 19 anywhere else on the body.
