There's are diesels in Europe that get better mileage than our hybrids here. What's wrong with this picture?

I have never understood why they don't put diesels in their hybrids. I mean a diesel jetta gets about 40 45. Put a hybrid setup in it with the same engine and you'd prolly get 60 65. That's enough mpg to rival my v-twin crotch rocket.

ya theres a big stigma about diesels here. the general public think diesels are gas hogging, forest killing, epitome of all things evil engines. when in reality, the new diesels are cleaner, more efficient and cheaper than gas. but if they thow in a diesel engine into a hybrid most people will simply not buy it.

true, the unfair and incorrect bad reputation of deisels must be removed from society here in north america cause then people would purchase durable and efficient deisels...deisels are incredible on fuel and provide lots of tourque but a deisel hybrid would be unprecdented for practicality and saving the environment

i think they are good but the problem with the hybrids in canada is the cold cause you need an engine to heat the heating elelment (or at least an engine works better and batteries are not that good in the cold)...however, if its good for th eenvironment, it gets my approval
Yeah totally useless here, transport canada had some tests done and found hybrids use as much gas as their engine only counterparts, using much smaller engines, haha.

An all electric car is also not an option due to the cold seasons vs battery life.

They killed that program because of the buy out, and a lack of interest, not to mention it makes the Jeep incredibely HEAVY!! Batteries are starting to catch up, but in my opinion hybrids are a big band-aid for a bigger problem. The VW/Audi diesels get 50 plus mpg already. But if you put in a hybrid drive you could easily make it 70 plus. I'm a diesel major, I work for the rail road. You want to make a damn good hybrid we need to make the system entirely electricly driven at the wheels. Locomotives diesel engines power a large generator, read almost ten tons of weight just in the alternator. But only use two batteries to start the locomotive. The alternator provides all the power and sends it to the traction motors (the wheels) underneath. If you put a small diesel that powered a large alternator to make power, we could still run smaller batteries and drive the vehicle with large power at the wheels and get amazing mileage. The big thing here in the States with diesel though is emissions. 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups have an entirely different emissions standard then small cars and half ton trucks. That's why Ford, GM and Mopar put a hold on their smaller diesel engines for the half ton sector.
