Re: Corporate Downsizing
i hear ya....
i work in the auto parts biz (they're all the same, just take your pick)
they would rather higher guys off the street who don't know the difference between a spark plug and a light bulb and pay them minimum wage
rather than train the good people they have who actually know their stuff and pay them well for it
i've worked here for 2 years and i can work circles around some of my co-workers who have been there for over 5
its bullshit
my DM keeps telling me its all about the sales...."add on the 2 for $4 towel sale, it'll boost your numbers"
i don't give a shit about my "sales numbers" i don't see any commission from it
i'd rather sell the customer what they need for the job....not force something down their throat that they don't need
i know where to look for that oddball part off a 55 Bel-air....i know who to call to rebuild that starter off that 1948 Ford 8N tractor...
lets see some punk off the street do it....more than once i've seen a co-worker say "nope...we can't get that" or "sorry....we don't do that" when all it took was 5 min of looking in a catalog or a 30 sec phone call
i actually like my job and put a lot of effort in it but for that hard work, i get paid a spit above min wage and it pisses me off
companies these days have gone to shit....they just look for the biggest profit
and to hell with the workers that get them there
/rant

Well, it does not have to be that way.
Our President is trying to get US affordable health care, whether anyone wants to believe it or not.
No other president besides first lady Hilary tried but the big boys with fat wallets and have their hands and face in the pockets of the drug companies and medical field.
Lets see how fast the NEW republicans will end healthcare for the American POOR

that would mean that he'd have to be open minded... which i'm sure will be far too much to ask.

Re: Corporate Downsizing
Not sure why you guys are turning this into a political issue. Capitalism encourages companies to follow whatever actions net them the most profit, that general concept doesn't change depending on which political party has power.

Re: Corporate Downsizing
Take it from someone that spent many years in the same company...it just doesn't happen anymore, so...don't do it! If you can, change jobs at least every 4 to 5 years. Every time that you take a new job, make sure it is for more money. Retirement paid by companies is a dead benefit so you don't need to be loyal to any company, be loyal only to yourself. Want to retire early? Save, save, save and then save. Take some risk while you are young, but always invest 'some' of that money in safer more conservative funds. Is better to earn less in your savings than to lose them. Do not live above and beyond your means. Live a simpler but good life and save the extra. The earlier you start to save, the better off you will be. Getting older will come sooner that you want, so starting to save earlier will only benefit you in the long run.
I followed these steps and was able to retire at 56...not too shabby now a days!

Re: Corporate Downsizing
The only thing that is worse is when companys take their business overseas to make extreme profits. Nike is a prime example.
