big brothers big sisters program
its been something i have wanted to do for a long time, well i finally jumped through all the hoops and ran their maze, today i get to meet my new little brother! im pretty excited but a little nervous.
now im just trying to think of things to do with an 8 year old boy with no parents, he lives with his grandma. I want to take him camping but its the wrong time of the year, will for sure take him to the snow, work on cars, gonna get him a bike if he doesnt have one, it would be nice to have some other suggestions maybe from the dads out there or just anyone with some good input.

Re: big brothers big sisters program
Good for you! I've been wanting to become involved and be a big sister, but my work schedule is so erratic I can't commit to anything like that.
I'm sure he'd be happy to just throw a ball around or go watch any sporting events (if you have anything like that close by).

Awesome! I always wanted to do that but I'm a little old now, my little brother would have to be around 40...lol I'd start out just spending some time getting to know him, you'll figure it out from there...

Yeah not sure an overnighter would fly... at least not off that bat... lol
Very cool that you do that... I work with a youth organization but it's a group of adults with a group of girls so not really one-on-one... might have to look into big sister deal when I can't do my deal anymore...

Re: big brothers big sisters program
Good on you!
The work idea is a good one, but I would take it slow to start. Maybe a lunch (pizza) or ice-cream take grandma with you then try a local fishing hole if it’s not too cold, the local roller/ice rink is a good place. I would go to populated places at first. after you two know each other and the grand mother trust you then who knows.

Re: big brothers big sisters program
I have been with my Little for close to 10 years now. One of the best things I have ever done. We are not even with the program anymore...we have become close and don't need it. I met him when he was 9 years old...now he just went into college. It's an amazing feeling to see a kid grow up.
Just know...it is a lot of work and you have to be patient with them. You are not trying to be a parent, but a friend and role model. That's the best advice I can give you on this.

Re: big brothers big sisters program
I know my son enjoys just going outside. Find out what his interest are. Take him to a playground and play on the equipment with him. If he doesnt know how to play baseball. Get him a glove and baseball. Baseball gloves are pretty inexpensive. Take him to batting cages.
I know growing up I would have killed for someone to just be there with me.

your never too old, my kid is 8 and they have older and younger kids in the program, you can still have fun with him, and be a positive role model in his life.
as for all the suggestions they are really appreciated. and yeah camping wouldnt be for awhile, i dont want to be in grams memory banks on the same page as micheal jackson...
fishing will definitely happen, there is a good lake 10 minutes down the road, 5 from hsi grams place. Im really excited about it, its something i have thought about for a long time, and im in a spot financially and mentally to really give him a good role model and friend.
and role models is an epic movie lol

That is what I was going to say. Anyways take him hunting, fishing, batting cages, football games, lazer tag, arcades, bike riding, to the movies, or just anything. After hanging out with him you will figure out what he likes. And this is a very good thing your doing.
