Default Need some help with a catalytic converter on a 2004 Taurus

Alright so this i car i am getting for free
It needs an upstream cat. It is like flat and on a 45 degree angle and their 400$
I am wandering if i can have a shop just run the pipe right down and put a regular pipe in. You think it will work?

do like i did with my '97 monte carlo

see if you can unbolt it, and use a few misc. peices of steel bar / crowbar / anything like that and just pound all the crap, er catalyst out of the thing. if that dont work then have a shop play with it, but hey, a free car diserves a free fix worked great for my car BTW

That might work if you don't have to worry about emissions testing. I'm thinking Ohio doesn't. We get hit here in Western PA with all the stuff that blows in and we have to "clean" it up with all the environmental crap our state makes us go through.

I have also been told of a way to "clean out" a catalytic converter if you have an old canister vac with metal tubes. You fill the cat with gas, hook up the vac with the hose attached to the blower side of the unit, and light a big assed fire under the cat to cook the crap out of it. I think the "containment" unit was an old cast iron tub. No idea if it really works but there you are. If you do it, I want video.

The Poconos is a very nice area. I've been there a couple times.

northeast ohio has echeck emissions laws.

must have a cat, some sort of muffler (coffee can qualifies), no check engine lights, o2 sensors, and you must pass the emissions test
