My first car was an '83 VW rabbit, paid $50 cash when I was 13, First car I could drive was a 1980 Datsun 720 4x4 $500 cash. Me and my brother went in 50/50 for the datsun when I was 17, on my 18th birthday my brother gave me his half . I mowed lawns for the money.

I had to work my ass off and save, Dad paid for the truck up front, then I had to pay off my father. I got some of the money through gifts, but I can proudly say I paid for my first truck, that I still own (my GMC, I know hate me later). Not only did I pay for it, I learned to earn money for things you want in life. I worked my ass off to pay off that truck so that my father no longer held the title.

My dad handed me the keys to my 08. However, I take really good care of it. Wash and wax at the minimum, ussually more like vacuming the interior and such once a week. Unlike my sister who has caked dirt on her extera. I treat my truck really good and baby the shit out of it.

When I turned 16 (1996) I was given my dads old 1981 Chevy 3/4 ton Silverado 4x4. I did not have to pay for the truck but I had to earn it. The house we lived in had a wood burning stove for the primary source of heat. I split every load of fire wood by hand from the time I was 12 to 16. I would say it was somewhere around 40 truck loads of wood a year. And trust me when I say the truck was not that much too look at.
Then the next winter after I was given the truck my dad bought a hydraulic log splitter. He taught me the value of working hard for something that you want.

I bought my first vehicle in 1993 when my 4 year hitch with the army was over. It was a 1989 Ranger XLT Supercab and it was quite affordable since I was working for the City of Leesburg making low money, certainly not the good money government employees make now!!!
Since the Ranger was affordable I have owned a total of 3 including the one I just bought.
