Electric cars are neat and fast, but they won't ever take over. Hydrogen is the future. Unless we can figure out how to charge a battery in less than 5 minutes that will last 200-300 miles (comparable to filling a gas tank).

Our current battery technology is well on it's way to doing just that. New battery tech is under development as we speak that is charging much faster and lasting longer than we ever thought possible. I just saw an interview on the net a week ago about a guy that has invented a new style of battery that can be to charged to 90% capacity in well under an hour, and expected range was around the 300-400 mile area, but it's still in the development and testing phase. Electric cars may indeed be the future, and you and I have no way of predicting that. Our government is sure pushing for it...

The pros are numerous when compared to using fossil fuel driven vehicles..

-Mostly pollution free daily operation..
-Far faster..
-Linear torque output that far exceeds gasoline or diesel engines..
-Higher horsepower levels are easily obtained, often from the factory.
-Modular construction techniques for easier servicing of drivetrains and wheel motors..
-Silent operation reducing overall noise pollution..
-Reduction of smog levels in major cities..
-Maintenance is less frequent and often much cheaper due to fewer components being used.
-Tax credits..
-Electric motors are known to outlast internal combustion engines by a large margin..
-Reduced operating costs.. > 1/3rd to 1/4 of the cost of a gasoline vehicle..
-The possibility of 100% renewable operation if using a home solar system to charge..
-Lower center of gravity which increases passenger safety by a large margin when compared to gasoline vehicles..
-Increased national energy security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil..
-Far fewer parts used in production = less to break..

Most of those "environmentaly friendly" points are invalid if you live in an area that uses coal/natural gas powered generating stations like here. Sure your car produces no emissions and doesn't use petroleum fuels, but you're still charging it with electricity made from coal. It's just the "out of site, out of mind" mentality. Unless the electricity going into the vehicle is also "green" it's like wiping before you poop.... pointless. You're not reducing emmisions, you're just moving them somewhere else.

And don't get me wrong, Im a fan of electric cars but they just, A. are not always truely environmentally friendly, and B. The technology and infrastructure to support them is still a ways off.

Contrary to your beliefs, yes, you are actually reducing emissions even if the car is charged using coal-fired power plants. Because converting that coal to electricity is still around 20% more efficient than refining gasoline, and then your vehicle wasting a huge amount of the power generated by burning gasoline through further efficiency losses such as heat, friction, rotational masses, etc. Add ethanol into that mix and you've just reduced your efficiency another 3% to 10%

Coal and gasoline efficiency losses aren't a directly comparable 1 to 1 ratio.

And where do you factor in the environmental impact of coal mining, and the impact of trying to dispose of toxic coal ash?

I don't imagine anyone, anywhere is really factoring that in to overall vehicle efficiency levels and environmental concerns, since that coal ash is going to be produced anyway, in the normal production of electricity for us power hungry Americans..

But nice angle on the argument and something that should definitely be looked at. Though I doubt electric vehicles are adding any real measurable amount to the overall amount of coal ash being produced at this point. Especially since EV's make up something like .2% of total vehicles on the road in the US. Maybe in another decade..
