Default Rear seat for car seat

Hey guys, I own a four door 2000 Ford Ranger. I have the two bucket seats in the back and 3 normal seats in the front. I have a 3 year old that uses her car seat in my VW. But I havent put her in my truck because it’s been broken down. Now that I fixed it, I’m iffy about letting her ride in the front, so I thought maybe putting her in one of the back seats. But the seat is a bit too small for her car seat. Would it be legal to build a little extension onto the seat? That way her car seat is completely covered on the bottom and it’s flat and straight up? I work at a metal factory so it wouldnt be a difficult task, so my only question is “is it legal?”

Turn the airbag off the passenger side and put her in the front seat in a child seat.

Question is whats "legal" mean? Let me offer an analogy

Next time you're behind a bus, NOTE that it says its "Unlawful" to pass a school bus when the lights are flashing, NOT illegal.

Without getting into semantics, Illegal/Legal is the Statutory equivalent of your Employers handbook on company policy written by Corporate talking heads/Private business bureaucrats if you will. "policies" can be changed at will for the benefit of the means and usually are.

"Lawful" attaches a morality clause to the situation however and what I feel is the best way to truly bring about the defining of these two words is; "At one time it was LEGAL to own slaves but that doesn't mean it was LAWFUL.."

So whether or not it could be legal or illegal, question boils down to would you lawfully want to take the risk knowing all of the details that go into seat belts, seats and their rail counterparts, and the functionality and operation of the child seat itself?

@Barneycat said it best.. turn the airbag off and put her in the front seat properly. Keep your lil one safe.

Exactly my thoughts, the information I’ve read about seat belts ends up confusing me in the end. In my mind I think “A seat belt is a seat belt” therefore it would hold her car seat like any other seat/seatbelt would hold it, legal or not, but I’ve stopped myself from doing it because I wonder “what if I’m missing something or not understanding something” That’s why I havent done it, but I also wonder if my child is less safe in the front than she would in the back? So in the end, she hasn’t rode in the truck at all.

How old is she? weight?

The guidelines for whether or not the child seat can face forwards or remain backwards is the key here along with proper seat belting; along with the ability to turn off the passenger side airbag feature present.

Likely you have a newer car seat, and it doesnt use those PITA S-clip cinchers anymore type and you can really get that car seat in their solid, sometimes those pool noodles cut to width to take up some space under the rear of the car seat in the wedge of the actual seat help in creating a stable surface. Put your knee into that car seat and put all your weight into pushing it back and into the seat and lock it in. the seat coming back up will create a proper tension on the seat belt.

It'll be a PITA getting it out, but your child's well being is more important.

Shes 3 years old but i forgot her weight. My wife and doctor told us it was time for her seat to be facing forward. So there’s no problem there
