Default 30 second survey?

Just signed on this morning, and was immediately assaulted with a &uckin' popup!!
Some cheery little female voice says, "Congratulations, you have been selected for this 30 second survey,,,,,,,,,,,," Didn't hear the whole BS spiel as I was concentrating on finding the little X to get rid of it.
In this age of cyberspammers, telemarketers, spoofers, and other pieces of shit, politicians, and a "Do not call registry" that doesn't work, if this was legitimate, why weren't the members let in on this.
Got a full computer scan starting shortly.
Anyone else get this?

I got a text the weekend before last saying my ATM/debit card had been closed and it was urgent that I call Bank of America right away on the number they included. Just one small problem.......I don't use BOA or any other bank, I use credit unions. Does this count?

LOL, sure we'll let that count. Luckily I don't get the texting crap, but you oughta see my email spam. I swear, when I was younger, I wish I'd been this popular with the Russian, Asian, and hot women in my neighborhood, as I am now!
I get the ones posing as Amazon, and even Paypal.
Oh yeah!!!! Don't forget all the reward crap Amazon, Walgreens, and especially MALLWART!!!. Like I'd ever grace a mallwart parking lot.

Everybody's got their hand in you pocket these days. Sucks, but gotta be vigilant and never let your guard down. I got an email about a week ago from CapitalOne telling me there is an issue with my CC. How in hell can that be when I haven't used it in over a year I'm thinking. Gotta be horse shite so don't click on any links I remind myself. Sure enough, a quick call via the 800 # confirms my suspicions. Shitebirds.

Then I get a call from some arsewipe telling me I have an issue with my Windows computer. That's real hard to do I told the jerk as I am running a Mac. Click.

My wife got that call about a problem with her computer. She's pretty direct and to the point whenever she suspects BS. Lately, I've getting popups telling me this BS, in fact, when I went to reply to your post, I got the damn popup again about the survey.
I'm very careful what I click on anymore, and absolutely NEVER answer a phone call unless I recognize the number. I just feel if it's legitimate, they'll leave a voicemail. Funny how I rarely get a voice mail.

----------

Just hit the reply again, opened up another window, and went direct to that survey BS.

21+ years of email and I've never had that problem. This because I have multiple, task specific email accounts and I use them accordingly to organize communications (ex: friends/family, ebay, forums+ecommerce, investments/business, the risky/"scum"/anyone/don't care account, etc). The risky email acct is great because that's where all the shit ends up, it works like a septic tank for e-waste and it's cleaned with the same love as any clogged septic system.

It's possible that after the scan is done, that the last time you saw so many Trojans in action was when you were in high school.

Absolutely.

I very selectively share my phone number and haven't been burned, must be doing something right. Still, I need to get a burner phone/burner number, and there are apps for that. You know what apps are, right?

Edit : something else......I also guard and restrict the cell number. For example, when I'm in a store or whatever and they want my phone number, I say, "I only share my personal cell phone number with friends and family", and then I watch the persons reaction (cuz they of course, understand and agree with me). If they insist on a number.......I give them the non-emergency one to the cop shop here, or something like that. Or just use one for another business, a former employer or give them one to a car dealer, anything but a wild guess that could be a persons home phone.

Default Re: 30 second survey?

My phone used to ring off the hook from telemarketers and surveys etc.

I did like everyone and registered with the national and state do not call list.

When calls to my home got more frequent after that, I contacted a attorney that specializes in suing these type of companies that use automated call bots.

He told me to play along, get the name of the company the time and date they called what method they used to call my phone ( auto dialer or live person )

Then once I get a live person I ask to be removed from their calling list. I inform them
that I have notes from this call and if they call again my attorney will sue them for $1500 per call.

It has taken some effort on my part but I no longer get any calls.

I used to just ask to be taken off their list yet I still got calls over and over.

It seems like they know I have a note pad and pen waiting next to my phone.

I was really hoping they would keep calling because I sure could use my portion of the $1500 per call.

One thing I have not been able to deal with is trying to sell a vehicle on craigslist.

I have a local dealership that has around 40 employees that do nothing but call people selling cars or trucks and try to convince you to trade in your car to them.

The problem is they all have different numbers, and they all call each listing at least three times per day.

Talk about ringing your phone off the hook.

I finally had no choice but to remove my listing. I think they know I wouldn't buy their car but they knew their calls would prompt me to remove my listing which eliminates their competition.

People like this are one of the lowest form of scum known to man.

Still getting popups, today, the theme appears to be my antivirus may be expired, and some BS about speeding my computer up.

I'll betcha at that car dealer, their first language isn't English either. Any dealer that pulled that kind of crap on me, would never ever get a cent from me, and I'd let what friends I have, that can afford a car, know about it as well.
I know the BBB is about as useful as the "Do not call registry". I'm next to the point of contacting my states attorney generals office. But then I realize they are lawyers, that bed down with the lawyers for these companies. Government lawyers have a habit of passing laws that benefit them, and not the general public, who, they supposedly represent.
Screw this, we're all lost, I'm going to go find a mountain top in Tibet or something!

This is turning into a rant, but it's nice to know, I'm not alone.

that's strange about the popups, i haven't gotten them form this site.

but on another site i was getting one every time i tried to open the homepage that required me to kill the browser and find a different route to get where i was going.

i have three different email addy's, one for crap, one for firends and family and other important stuff, and then one that i keep around from college, i only keep it because the university charged all the engr students a fee to support the new-to-them email server. i keep it adctive just to make a point i guess lol, i still get interesting email there related to the university

You should always be running good, AV software with up to date virus defs that you pay money for (if you are comfortable with free AVG, that's on you) and you should always run a good firewall which can be software or hardware and both. If you do nothing else with your firewall software, keep it up to date and make sure it will shut down attempts made to do port scans. Your home network, you can enable mac address filters, thus ensuring that the only communications on your network will be between devices you designate and none other (well, NSA surely could get in if they wanted to, lol). To further your home network security, don't use the PIN + push-to-add devices feature on the router/device to add devices to your network as WPS has a big security vulnerability and is easy to hack. Instead, turn that "consumer friendly" chit off and create your own network password, up to 63 characters long, case sensitive, and throw in a few characters (mine is around 35). Finally, don't surf risky sites (porn is at the top of the list) on your primary device. Note I didn't say don't surf pro altogether.

These items are probably the top of the list leaders as far as interwebz and home network security goes. On your phone number, no, don't hand that out like cotton candy (example....buy a product, validate/activate a warranty card or go online, no, they don't get any personal number and no, they get the "scum" email address because you may as well just assume they will share the email addy). Watch you you give your home address too, so as to avoid somehow getting on junk mail lists. As for your interwebz browser, think about using Firefox along with the adblock plus addon to kill most popups. If you are annoyed by auto starting flash vids, there is a flash vid block out there too.
