Then........come next year, when the new Ranger hit's the streets, see if there is a renewed interest in the site; if it takes off decide if it's worth keeping and if not, maybe IB will buy it, and if the site doesn't take off, decide at a later date how to play the cards. Fold, sell, give, etc etc.

Definitely will never just shut the doors.
Extremely unlikely to sell the forum. I've had a number of inquiries over the years and not my cup of my tea. I've experienced and heard about enough forums being sold that it just seems like a bad experience.
What I need to figure out - which has significantly frustrated me - is what to do with the forum software.
vBulletin (makers of this forum software) sold out to IB a few years ago. IB did what they do with everything they buy, they ran it straight into the ground. So for all intents and purposes vBulletin is dead.
There's two other forum software that have been rising up fairly steadily but they still had a number of quirks last I looked at it. By now they are probably pretty stable and worth looking at again though.
Switching forum software has a high risk of completely killing a forum though as it means the entire look and feel will be different. Buttons will be different places, have to click different things. Like going from Myspace to Google Hangout. Same concept just feels a lot different.

By Tim, horsepuller, or one of the moderator minions?
*More than one mod has quit that job on the grounds of being asked to do unreasonable things to members. It was also really funny when the previous owner tried to patch in a Vbulletin function called "miserable user" to a Vbulletin upgrade, and in the course of doing so he didn't realize that we had access to the mod and admin forums, and could not only see what they were saying about us (a very large group of members), but the shitty things being said about their mods. What a nuthouse.

Thanks for the update, and you're one of the several people I hear talking about the frustration of Vbulletin updates, and I believe it was Vbullitin that someone I know upgraded and YES, the upgrade (and sloppy backup) resulted in wiping out years of threads and posts (and drove many members away).
Funny you mention this, "IB did what they do with everything they buy, they ran it straight into the ground." because the list of their examples is quite long. It all begins with (significantly) upping the cost to advertisers...........
***Banning Ken Payne from the website he founded was not running it into the ground, that was a tremendous site improvement. But....I just know to much about "the original admins", so I'll stop.

Re: FRF Watercooler / BS Thread 2016 (V2.0)
Current program seems to be working reasonably well. For example, the lying kid has largely moved on to another (brown) pasture. Tyler knows some people don't think making bastard kids and sucking welfare checks are quite as cool as he thinks it is. There is more.
