School Maintenance Dept. Truck
Hey everybody, so I'm driving into school today, I'm a student, and notice a new truck in the maintenance department's parking lot at school. 2016 GMC Sierra 2500HD. Gas. 4x4. No plow. Now, you may be asking why I have doubts to us "neededing" this. We already have 4 late 90's 3500HD's with a diesel engine, plow, and duallys, that sort of makes sense because they put the dump bed on in the winter and put salt in that, fine, that's reasonable. Now, this new truck.. the maintance department does not tow much more than a 15' trailer in a 15 mile radius to the 5 schools in the district. They haul everything from mowers to desks, I imagine 1,000lbs of weight on the trailer max. I personally don't see the reason behind them buying a SRW 2500HD with a gas if they could get by easily with a 1500? Or am I just going crazy..

Maybe they got a good deal on the 2500 since 2500 gasolines are less desirable. Ask someone who knows if it worries you that much.

Hell our county has had the same old f-150s and 1500s sense i was in middle school. I think they had maybe 2 Chevy 08 2500 gas burners with work bodies on them.

My question is, why are you worried about it? Maybe they bought a 2500 in case one of the 3500s are about to be phased out due to needed too much work and they don't really need 3500s. Maybe they want a 2500 gas because maintenance costs are less and they don't want a light duty.

15+ year old chevys that have been used to plow and salt? I bet they are run into the ground. Eventually every maintenance department will need a new truck, I'm sure that new pickup was the best deal they could find on an HD truck, and will likely have a plow and spreader before next winter.

most folks don't. hell I never gave it much thought until I started working with a maintenance department, these trucks take a beating like you wouldn't believe between plowing snow ( front suspension wear, & tough on the driveline ), spreading salt (= lots of rust quick), stop & go driving, and rarely being driven above 30 MPH really takes its toll.
like I said i'm amazed they got 15+ years out of what they have, where I work we were originally supposed to get a new truck every 5 years. yet our oldest light duty truck is an '04 F450 that is literally falling apart from rust, only has 40k miles.

It doesn't " worry" me that much, but before reading what many people said - I just didn't see any purpose behind getting a new truck. Some of the people who replied made really good points that I hadn't thought of. It's just one of those things that you think about and try to figure out the reason behind it, but with no benefit to you. Like why your neighbor has a firetruck in his driveway. There's no reason why I should know, but I want to. That kind of thing. Thank you everyone for your replies!
