First thing first is, you'll need to tear it all down and take the heads and bare block to a machine shop so they can magnaflux them and all that fun shit and check for cracks. Won't be terribly expensive there.
Then once you get those those back, you can start taking measurements and finding out what pistons, rods, rings, etc, etc, etc, you can go with.
You'll need several tools for this, not cheap harbor freight garbage either. The most important tool you'll need is service information. That way you know what the specs and tolerances are for bearings, crank and cam stuff, etc, etc, etc, etc....that way you know if everything is serviceable and what is trash.
As far as actual tools....
One's plastigauge.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-pg1/overview/
One's a good bore dial indicator.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-900041/overview/ This way you can find out the diameter and wear on the cylinder walls.
A good set of outside micrometers to measure the pistons, crank journals, and cam journals.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/po...2006/overview/
Make sure you know how to READ these things. If you never have used an old school micrometer before, you will be scratching your head.
If all the numbers check out, and are within spec, you can find out what size bearings you'll need, etc, if you want to hone the cylinders and find out what oversized pistons you can run, all that fun shit.
Of course you'll need other specialty tools, especially when it comes time to remove and install the camshaft bearings.
But for a basic 302 build, that about covers it.

Oh Hai it's Pill Cosby!

Thanks dude! Gonna copy and save this somewhere so I can check that stuff out more when I get some time. As far as special tools go, I know my dad has some stuff from when he was a mechanic at a Chevy dealer yearssss ago. I'll have to check with him on exactly what he has though.

Re: FRF Watercooler / BS Thread 2015 (V4.0)
You can make a 500 horse 302 for pretty cheap, just the right set of heads, a good cam, a nice intake and a giant carb.
Only problem is if you do that....you are going to have to find something to stick the engine in. My vote...is a go cart. Nah, better yet, a custom tube frame trike. Fuck 4 wheels, lets do 3.

Re: FRF Watercooler / BS Thread 2015 (V4.0)
500 crank isn't...
Depends on what it goes into, if it goes into something with an automatic tranny, you are only talking about 400whp, haha.

Re: FRF Watercooler / BS Thread 2015 (V4.0)
You'd be surprised. There's plenty of budget street fox body mustangs rolling around here with 450-500whp with no bottle that were built for less than $5,000, including the price of the car. To me, that's cheap. $5,000 for a 500whp car?
Granted, they look like shit, but that's the point. Surprise people.
There's a brown/red/gray/bondo/rust one that lives a few blocks south of me. Looks like pure shit. But gutted interior, drag radials in the back, skinnies up front, full roll cage. Makes 500whp no bottle. 750whp with bottle. Not to be fucked with. He works at the speed shop around the corner from me, his daily driver? A Turbo '02 SS Camaro. Not sure what the exact specs of that one are, he just got it together, but I know it's a big turbo, since it's lag lag lag, and then the sound of a fucking jet engine going full throttle and then all you see is tail lights well off in the distance. My guess is that one's around 1,000hp though. The exhaust exits on the lower right of the front bumper, I see it around quite a bit, I'll try to snag a pic of it sometime.
The shop owner, oh you know, he's just got a couple twin turbo vipers, some built vettes, and an 87 Buick Grand National with a turbo the size of a damn beach ball that's sticking out of the front grill.

450-500 is the breaking point for a 302w block

Welp new flywheel coming lol. This one isn't drilled for the clutch I need. Ordered more flywheel bolts just in case. Trying to think of whatever else might come up this week
