Re: BP oil spill
BP should pay for the entire clean up, and if they opt not to, seize all their assests and use the money to clean it up.

Re: BP oil spill
Live feed:
http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_inte...ov_stream.html
They are cutting the riser where it is attached to the blow out preventer right now as we speak. Its basically a giant subsea band saw attached to the riser and its being operated by an ROV behind it. Video you're seeing is the feed from a second ROV watching the cutting job.
The theory is, once they have a clean cut, they can then attach a cap to the clean cut. In theory, this should work. However, given their failure rate up to now I can't say I'm all that enthusiastic about it working. In addition, by cutting off the mangled up riser, the oil will now flow unrestricted until the cap is in place which could increase the oil flow by over 20%. If the cap fails: Oceanic Chernobyl.
As for cleanup, this exceeded the capacity of our spill response equipment and personnel by the first week of the incident. Containment is virtually impossible. I just don't know what they can even begin to do about it. The things they're doing out there now, basically an exercise in futility.
The BOP should have sealed this thing off before the rig even sank. It had redundancy on top of redundancy. And all of them failed. W-T-F.

Amazing thing is that its clearer than its ever been in most parts. The strands of line or cord that is keeping the oil out in the sea is actually keeping sea weed and other junk out. Its very clear and surprisingly clean for the moment.

Re: BP oil spill
The cap idea will work if they an overcome some challenges. They have to place the cap using video cameras and ROV's which are slow, cumbersome, and difficult, in zero visibility in a plume of high pressure oil. The plan is good. It's the conditions that make it extremely challenging. I wouldn't be surprised if they can't do it, and the rate of discharge will jump even higher when that happens.
The other things they were doing were half-assed wastes of time. This is the only thing that is worth the time and effort being spent on it, and frankly there is nothing else that can be done until the relief wells are done. Frankly they should have started doing this last month.

ya thats what ive read, that everything esle they've done was just so it looked like they were trying to stop it. but in reality they were just buying time to think of something that could actually stop it

Re: BP oil spill
They've always known this was the most likely to succeed. Hell, I looked at the pictures and said this a month ago when it started and I'm not a subsea exploration engineer. My basic hazmat training and common sense said "duh?" I just don't understand why they kept futzing around with those other ideas.

Re: BP oil spill
So is it true that the equipment that failed had received citation after citation for the use of faulty equipment well before this happened and BP just kept paying the fines ?
And is New Orleans ever gonna get a break?

Re: BP oil spill
We have gotten a few calls from them looking for equip. to ship to the coast... I heard they are already dealing with about 3 other dealers and who knows who else they are still talking to but from what I can tell they are trying to copy the Valdez, AK cleanup efforts...
