Well the good news is the flow has slowed down a bit. Last night they cut the long section of the collapsed riser off leaving only the bent up piece on top of the blow out preventer (the part they need to cut off clean and smooth). They pinched off the end of that piece of pipe which slowed the oil coming out the end of it significantly. There is still the large break in the pipe where it is bent coming off the blow out preventer and that is still leaking profusely. So the flow is slower than before, but not "slow".

The saw being used to make the clean cut on top of the blow out preventer has been jammed and stuck for most of the day (can't we ever catch a damn break...). Once it is un-stuck, they can continue cutting. Once it is chopped off, they can try to put the cap on it. The oil flow is going to increase a LOT once it is cut off and before they put the cap on it.

Unjamming this saw is clearly not going well. It really looks like it is in the same spot it was in last night at 1am when I fell asleep.

They have successfully cut off the riser at the blow out preventer. It's not a super clean cut but its about the best it's gonna be. The oil flow is clearly higher than it was before as expected. Hopefully they can get a cap on it this afternoon. I will be pleasently surprised if they pull this off on the first try.

Working for one of the land management agencies of the Gov't, this has sorta hits a point with me. One of my coworkers in Washington has been detailed to the gulf, and sent this to me today:

http://www.ifitwasmyhome.com/

It basically shows how big the spill is, localized to where the app can get off your location.

Well, I hope it works. BP in my mind has been negligent for quite some time. They are/were in charge of maintaining the Alaskan Pipeline and nearly botched that one a few years back due to lack of maintenance. I don't buy from their stations if I have a choice since then. This only reinforces that policy.

Yes, I know all about the fuel all coming from the same pipe line and they just add their own additives before delivering the fuel to the stations. I still would prefer my money go to another oil baron than BP.

Edit: Hell, I've spend a good portion of my career supporting various actions in the Middle East, partly because of oil. We really need to find another viable energy source and get rid of all these jokers. Until then, drilling locally is the only available near term solution. Let the Arabs eat their oil.

Did anyone watch the congressional hearings today. I was overcome with a desire to reach through the TV and strangle Tony Hayward. Bipartisan ass kicking he got today.

Glad to hear that I wasn't alone there.

Anyone see this yet? It's footage made during the preparation for a documentary made by Edward James Olmos about The New Orleans estuary systems. So they're just talking to people and seeing who has what to say etc.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Not only BP. The government sat on their thumb a long time before the decided to do anything and President Obama who said he wouldn't rest until this was over. He's been on what, four vacations now? Plus the company that rented the platform an equipment to BP (it wasn't their platform).

Also, the reason they are drilling in locations that are so deep is because of the drilling ban. If this problem was closer to shore, they might have been able to send divers down to do the repairs. Instead, this well is so damn deep that only robotic subs can do the work.

I live in South Alabama. I'm in Gulf Shores (the beach) and in North Baldwin. This whole situation could have been taken care of if they would have started burning the damn oil when it hit the surface. Then you have these *******es in Washington who don't want to cap it off so they can do away with offshore rigs. Well the problem tou run into is you will strangle the economy in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama. If it wasn't for these ******* envirormentalist we wouldn't have to drill offshore and we could have cheaper and safer rigs onshore. So thank you goverment, because Brazil is going to because thats where your oil is about to come from.
